Some vttc's have a patently silent/static streamer that just sorta shoots out of the topload. I don't have any videos handy, but it quite impressive to see a 10" slightly curved spike of plasma that is completely static.

Re: 4hvers on YouTube
Hazmatt_(The Underdog), Sat Feb 17 2007, 04:59AM

That's just me at the switch is all.

This was a video of various tests. I'm looking for certian things while trying not to 'stress' components too much.
One example of this was that the doorknob bank kept flashing over so I was trying to minimize that by turning off every so often. If I just kept running the bank would probably flash over a lot more. I had to replace the first bank plates because they got burned a bit from flashes. So its several things, but mostly just to keep it from eating itself.

Just a small question, how do you make the high quality videos that load fast? When I set the video bitrate too high, the quality is ok, but the vid is loading most of the time.

lol, i meant there are some videos that are crappy quality and buffer often, then there are high-quality videos that do not buffer at all, I was just wondering how to make such videos smile
Re: 4hvers on YouTube
Steve Conner, Thu Feb 22 2007, 10:52PM

I think the quality and speed of a YouTube video depends on its popularity, because of some kind of bandwidth capping they use. If hardly anyone is watching a vid, it plays quickly with hardly any buffering. So if you want a high-quality vid that plays smoothly, make a boring vid and don't promote it. JM2C though.
Re: 4hvers on YouTube
Mike, Thu Feb 22 2007, 10:57PM

I have found that if there is one thing Microsoft made right, it was the WMV codec. Compresses very fast and gets very small, perfect for online videos. I use some generic video converter called Blaze Media Pro and have it set to NTSC 384kbps or if you want better quality use NTSC 768kbps. A 3:50 minute video compressed to about 5-6mb at a pretty good quality.
So I now announce my new video, it will go on youtube.com soon but for now its on google video.

Link2 and Link2
Build the disrupter and hook the output of the ucc to pin 2 of the fod2200 and the ground of that circuit to the pin3 of the fod2200.
Do NOT use same power supply for the Fod2200 chip and the ucc/transistor. I used a 9v battery to power those. The fod2200 can be run off the same supply you run the ucc's off of (5v though, so throw in a regulator)
Steve W helped me understand how it worked, its basically the audio goes into the disrupter which converts the audio to a squarewave somewhat, then that goes to the Fod2200 chip which is an optoisolater and then you hook the output of the fod2200 up to the enable pins of the ucc's. If you dont get arcage at first, use a scope and check places around, you will have to vary settigns quite a bit to find the waveform , since its kinda odd. Also, tweak that pot alot, sometimes if its set to far off there will be no arcs.
Make sure on the disrupter.jpg that instead of hooking the outp 18ohm resistor and ground to an led, hook it to the pins 2 and 3 of the fod2200.
Thanks to Joe(epilektrik) and Sam (smlizz) for the circuit. It is really nice

Finally got around to signing up on YouTube, and I just uploaded a video of my old 3.5" coil running during a gap test. It ran pretty well, considering it was made mostly from junk. It has since been disassembled. About the only part of it I was proud of was the topload sphere made from two 14" Ikea mixing bowls that I actually bothered to weld together (no feeble aluminum tape for me!! shades

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAuxXUkUGpk

In the video, you can hear the breakrate go up and see the streamers start to jump around more as the power goes up. At a full 1kW input, the streamer would exceed four feet in length, which was more than twice the length of the secondary winding. I had to run with a breakout point on top or the secondary would flash over from top to bottom. The primary was a helical wound on a plastic bucket sitting directly on the floor of my garage, and the primary was perched on a ceramic flower pot inside the bucket smile

Re: 4hvers on YouTube
Tesladownunder, Sat Mar 17 2007, 06:19AM

Playback speed was increased to 300% for the action scenes both to give a Charlie Chaplin silent slapstick movie feel and to speed up the rather dull sparks in that light. I did try to interpolate 100 frames (manually!) to give the effect of a uniform field but it wasn't convincing.
Actual rotation speed is about 10 seconds per revolution which is easy for thieves to avoid I guess.
I did night time shots with great looking sparks but there was severe motion blur with the reduced frame rate and you couldn't see the bad guy. The brightest sparks are to the dummy thief who had a grounded wire in his torso.
Smoke was from a smoke generator controlled by Chris in the car and timed to smoke at the time of th sparks.
I wet the ground to intensify the sparks.

This video clip is mine:

Link2

It's from about 8 years ago - Not sure how it found it's way onto Youtube though.

For what it's worth it used low-side PWM of the gate-drive signals to modulate the RF power and the resonant frequency of the SSTC is around 350kHz.

Oh, and the tune is a remix of Rapture by Iio on Data Records, as that seems to be the most commonly asked question!

On another note: after having seen the level of professionalism at the Arizona group, it made me reflect on the level of LACK of professionalism on some simple arc-drawing a great many You-Tube flicks.

Some of the most dangerous "experiments" I have ever seen in my life have been posted on You-Tube. ARC DRAWING IS A LOT OF FUN CERTAINLY, BUT USING A MOT TO ACCOMPLISH THAT needs a basic safety level that appears missing in a great many flicks.
A quick search for a certain schematic with ballast showed a young man using short needle nose pliers to draw and arc, another clearly shows the string of wires so close to the exposed body of the participant that I was actually waiting for the the negligence to take it's toll, etc, etc

You-Tube attracts an enormous amount of interest to this hobby but the level of knowledge beyond what DOES draw an arc is often missing. If one were to view a series of videos with a horrendous lack of safety imbued in their execution, THAT number would be very sobering.

Other hobbies were pounded into obscurity due to accidents made public but with You-Tube it's a whole different ballgame. The viewer sees what interests him and believes that such a thing can be constituted with the same manner of casual usage seen in the 3 minute video. The number of MOT arc videos is very high. I have some real concern that will lead to MOTs being treated with a low level of care especially due to their simplicity, availability, low cost, and ease of use.

Is this just me or do others see some seriously sloppy usage of lethal level HV experiments?

Yes. Insanity of all kinds abounds on NoobTube. Link2

I've often wondered whether we are being irresponsible when we promote playing with MOTs. Personally, I choose not to play with them, but when it comes to other people, they can do whatever they like. If you want to try and teach the whole of Youtube about electrical safety, you're welcome to try, but there are so many idiots out there that it's hardly worth the effort. I wouldn't try and stop them any more than I'd try to stop that guy jumping 3 flights of stairs on a bike.

Standard practice seems to be to avoid wood as an insulator around here. I used a 15kv 30ma NST and a little bit of water to put this to the test. Link2

On its own the wood did not arc over but with even a little moisture or the carbon from a pencil was enough to burn deep traces into the wood. The slow motion was filmed at 600fps.
