Why the new 4HV?

Philcogrump, Wed Feb 22 2006, 12:44PM

Just wondering why change to this new board software? So far I was rather happy with the old "blue 4HV" because it downloaded much faster than this. Also this new 4HV seems to have more glitches than the old one.

I also liked the recent threads list on the left which was on the old site, much easier to see what was new rather than having to browse each topic in the forums.

The development of the old software stopped so no more security or bug fixes. The new software also is less resource hungry and has better support for plugins. A plugin for displaying a recent thread list is being worked on.

There are some quirks with the new software, hopefully it will improve.

Would this equate to faster loading as well? Since the launch, my loading times for the new 4HV have been extremely slow. This is true whether i use my work computer, my home computer, my laptop computer, or the computer at my parent's house. The page will usually load, then stop loading and lock-up for about 2-5 seconds, before finishing loading. This is true for almost every thread i load.

It makes the server generate the page faster. Why there is a delay I am not sure. It seems almost like the browser does not display the page until it has been completely downloaded and rendered, in addition there sometimes are some other delay.

The delay is variable and seems to hit some people worse than others, I guess it would only take a few minutes for someone that knows the details to figure it out.

The spikes on the graph are pages that had long delays, data seems to be transferred all the time but the display of the page is not before all the data has been downloaded. I found some pages in the archive that had similar load times but they displayed the top of the page instantly so it masked the load time since it is possible to start reading at once.

Changed a few settings. Let me know if there are any improvements.

Fast as lightning, from here now. The old board was never so fast for me...

** Add you Tesla coil here ** now loads from first pic and can be read much earlier (like on the prev 4HV). Thanks Chris.
Now for that post numbering...

Same here, and has been since it opened.

It is many times faster now.

I noticed the slow thing as well, but now it's much quicker. I'd be intrested to know what settings you've "changed" tongue Or are they top secret shades

Still very slow for me and the old color was easier to read, and it freezes up all the time! Still its easier to post.

I would have to say that it is slower than before sad
It is usually about the same, but when first coming to the form it takes a few seconds before it loads the forum.php (the screen is just white, then it loads instantly). Every once and a while there will be a second or 2 of delay when clicking on a thread or something, but I am not sure if that is you or my isp/modem/network/etc

I also liked the dark blue a lot better (because dark blue is my favorite color)..., and these new smilies don't really do it for me...

Still waiting for that recent topic list wink

Not to get you down, I realise why we changed and am happy with the 10mb upload limit, better search, etc... Just my opinion...

Wonder if its possible to put a "colour scheme" setting for your profile.. The dark background and light text is much easier on the eyes.

however, I believe there is a greasemonkey script or firefox extension which can do this. but I cant seem to find it at the moment.

I would subscribe too for a dark background and white letters...good for eyes.

Now there seems to be a big improvement in the download speed of this site and the forum threads. Thumbs up on that.

What about the recent posts in the margin like on the old site? Any reasons for dropping that?

It is not part of the forum software and will need some work before it works again.

I've not had any complaints about speed, but I'm with the others, the old color scheme was better.

Let’s bring back old Blue!

Make a colour/graphics scheme, and perhaps then someone will implement it for you.

Is there any chance that the old blue background may be put to use in the new forum? The “old blue” with white letters was not only classy but also much easier on the eyes. Good Old Blue has my vote.

This thread has drifted slowly and agonisingly off topic.

If you have a suggestion about colour scheme or whatever, start a new thread about it.
