Tannerite

Hello everyone!
Yes, I am back. A recent visit to tannerite.com has piqued my interest in what this mystery binary explosive could be. According to the site, it's not illegal (commerce-wise, anyway) and it looks relatively safe. I'm sure that this is a simple mixture of an oxidizer and fuel. Anyone care to speculate on its composition?

I feel that this is right on the border of the "no illegal explosives" rule, but since it's said to be legal, I won't close this thread yet. However, if I get any indications that this is against board rules, I'll close the thread. Welcome back by the way.

There is some information on wikipedia: Link2 and you'll most likly find a lot on apcforum.net and in the roguesci archives.

Edit: and in the apcforum archives: Link2

The wiki article says what the composition is. It's hard to see what else there is to discuss about its chemistry.

We could always discuss the fun of adding extra ingredients like titanium powder and 4 gallons of petrol. This links to some flash movies of someone testing this mixture Link2

It all seems to be perfectly legal, in Idaho at least smile If you look at the guy's site Link2 you'll see that he takes a lot of care to store and mix the explosives safely, and has a proper ATF licence for it all.

I should point out that "completely legal in all states" is a lie.

In California, to have anything that explodes (even down to a small model rocket motor) required a permit from the state fire marshal. I don't know about any other states.

Also, after you have mixed the 2 propellants it is now considered an explosive (probably a high explosive), and likewise you need a LEUP to store or transport it.

So... It is only legal if you mix it in the field, and you state doesn't have any other requirements for it.

In any case, if sounds like it is just ammonium perchlorate that you add a fuel and a sensitiser to to make it an explosive...

I'm with BC. Could someone please clarify where this thread is going?
