This is an ac flyback from an NoS vendor. I wired it as a high impedance primary that resonates roughly at 100khz and put it across an igbt inverter. The inverter is driven with constant 100khz carrier and modulated using voltage cancellation technique to a 60hz fundamental. I should have been using a fiber interrupt instead of just switching the main power of the bus voltage on/off for testing. It caused a surge current and popped a switch. Dang. Switch was replaced and more testing will resume later. Using psoc I can modulate in various waveforms directly to the voltage cancellation as well as add deadtime to help prevent shoot through. I’m pretty new to all this converters stuff btw but it’s thoroughly interesting.

Ah sorry for spamming lol. It’s supposed to be the start of a plasma beam. I have a ring inside the tip of the pvc as one electrode and a wire centered in the ring as the other electrode. The theory is that with an equal potential within the circle it could allow the beam to blow up like a balloon when air is forced between them to replace the dielectric. I my build it’s never going to be exactly centered and it’s always going to favor discharging to one side. But it’s a start. It’s very much non lethal to touch the arc because the system is bipolar and wants to discharge to itself more than to ground. However it’s still dangerous to touch the electrodes and would feel like a 600w taser. It won’t burn paper because the air cools anything the arc touches. As I see it there is no practical application for this so it’s purely entertainment. It does act like a radio jammer thing and messes with my laptop when I’m using a picoscope.

Some extra thoughts I have for manipulating the arc; rotating magnetic field at the nozzle at the same frequency of operation would jet the arc out further with less air blowing. I think a Rodin coil could accomplish a rotating B field but that is uncharted waters for me. Also adding some type of gas would increase the flame size similar to the butane sword build floating around YouTube. Or a crystalline compound that can serve as a combustible fuel could replace the center electrodes tip. That would make sense too.
