New Topology

The Lightning Stalker, Sat Mar 16 2019, 05:19AM

I don't have anywhere else currently to release this so I'm putting it here. This is still just a preliminary drawing and has not been tested.

Of course the image uploading is broken.

Ok try this

You need to add an oscillator to the input, the oscillator is not going to self-start, and Ctank needs to go away, or go in parallel to the primary.

Isn’t that a current sense transformer? It might oscillate but with a bad phase shift.

It's the base return of his coil primary that he's using as feedback to steer the oscillator, but at turn-on there is no feedback.

The pot and resistor are there to provide startup bias.

As far as I can see the phase between input and output is inverted, i.e. the dots need to be the other way, and I'm not sure the dv/dt of the turn on will be enough to kick the input the other way to start the oscillation.

The N/P follower is non-inverting, so it should be in phase.

I would have thought you need more gain in the loop to ensure oscillation. Also what are you doing with that 2n2222 at the bottom of the bias chain? Is that meant to be a constant current bias? Because thats a horribly unstable way to do that - depends heavily on the transistor gain and temperature. You would be better off with just a resistor.
Also startup is more likely if you were to bias your follower into class AB.

All very valid points
The 2N2222 is for the interrupter. If and when I test it I'll find out what if anything needs to be modified. The MUR diode in particular will probably need to be something with greater IF.

Updated the OP with a modified schematic after doing some simulation. I liked the idea of driving series resonant but it results in a more voltage dependent step-up mode instead of the desired current to voltage conversion. After all Tesla coils are supposed to be current to voltage converters. Anyway that is as far as I can trust the accuracy of the simulation.
