The MEGA MOT!

Mr.Warwickshire, Tue Jan 29 2019, 06:13AM

Hey all. I used to be pretty active on this forum and in the HV world. I got distracted by the fun world of mechanics... anyways, I'm back and in my desperate need to wind a coil, I figured I would do something never done before (I like doing that). I took two MOT cores cleaned em up, and then attached them together with two primaries and a HUGE secondary coil. Essentially, I rewound two MOTs, welded them together and ended up with a killer 7500V transformer! I wound the secondary with 32awg magnet wire, and because of how exciting and successful this was, I am soon going to wind another one with 38awg wire for 15-20kV. This stuff is so fun! I've attached a few pictures of the proudly named MEGA MOT. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on improvements, etc from you guys. Thanks!

Here's a video of it arcing:

Sorry guys, I guess I can't attach the pictures directly to the site. Here they are:

That is really nice Good work I am always in to transformer design I like it.

yes and the use of pie windings is nice to see. did you 3d print the bobbin?

Yes I designed the bobbin and 3d printed it in ABS

ive been looking at all the plastics we use in printers and trying to see what there lossyness and self heating would be in HF transformers. of course at 1kHz and less it wont matter.

I have used both PLA and ABS in HF HV transformer bobbins with great success. If I remember correctly, ABS is a more suitable material to use however (PLA being one. biodegradable and two. having a weaker dielectric strength) due to being more tolerant to heat and physical stress. Here's a bobbin made from PLA used in my HF XRT project:

excellent pie windings, very nice winding.

but how do you raise the end and beginning windings past the walls ?

I'm not sure what you mean. confused
