Report all forum problems here

Bjørn, Wed Dec 12 2018, 08:37AM

The forum software had to be updated because of mandatory system upgrades, this has left the forum in a partially broken state and it will take some time to get it fixed.

Please post any problems you may notice so it will be easier to find and fix them.

Thank you for taking care of our forum for so many years.

For past week or more:
image thumbnails in old posts don't link to the full size images. Would be very sad if the full size images have been lost.

For past couple days:
Can't upload images. Dialog prints a list of acceptable file types, and the list is empty.

More specific examples can be given if you want.

There are backups of the pictures so they should be possible to restore.

Specific examples would be helpful. Examples in the form "I did x, I expected y but got z" will make it easier to get everything updated correctly.

Current list of problems:

1. After posting a reply the Forums pane is blank instead of showing the end of the thread or the forum page the thread belongs in.

2. Can't edit my own or anyone else's posts, but sometimes it works with no clear pattern.

3. When I try to delete a thread I get a dual language pop-up that says:
"På 4hv.org står det
Are you sure?
OK | Avbryt"
When I click OK the thread is deleted.

4. For past week or more: image thumbnails in old posts don't link to the full size images. Would be very sad if the full size images have been lost.

5. For past couple days: Can't upload images. Dialog prints a list of acceptable file types, and the list is empty.

1) When you take very long to write an answer, the "Post a reply" button in the bottom center does not work.
One has to Copy to Clipboard the text, then reload the page, paste the text, and then the button does its job.

2) On top of the first post on every page, there is "LAN_403" text

3) i am personally really pissed off by the captcha during login. It is case sensitive and it drives me crazy. There is no way to distinguish capital V from v or X from x or C from c or O from 0.. and the worst thing is, that you have to type in your login data again - because of a captcha that you never had a chance to solve. hate it. If it is really necessary, use a different database. Or save the login data.

4) i do not find a way to contact members via PMs. I think the button is gone.

[Edit spelling]

5) Hehe. After editing, the note that i edited the post, did not show. (to me)

Let's try posting a picture today.
"Attach file(s) / image(s)". Browse... select file. Its name.jpg appears next to Browse button. Click Preview ... no thumbnail in preview, no image stuff here in composition box.

At least the Edit button works!

We have seen a few people include images using more basic methods, but that practice is discouraged for very good reasons. Not only because in-line images should be small (unless reader clicks on them). They should be on 4hv.org server, so readers a year later don't get broken links.

Uhhh ... but all links to old images on the server have been broken for the past few weeks. I wish you best of luck getting that fixed, maybe after end-of-year demands in real life.

For me too, the captchas typicallly require more than one attempt. But the captchas are a much smaller problem than the new image and old image problems.

After logging in a few times, I've concluded that the captchas aren't broken, just really difficult. They frequently have shaded bits that are part of the code, like something that turns out to be an "f" when zoomed in looks like a "t" otherwise, because the curl at the top is in a very light grey. Ctrl-scroll is the way to go to get it right first time.

Edit: Also, after posting the message field is blank where it used to say "Success!" Making it difficult to know it worked.

On top of everything else, I can't access old PMs - in fact it appears that the entire private messaging system has just vanished. neutral

i cant post pics... but .. its no big deal really.... no rush on my behalf.

For the pics, under "Please Note", you have "Allowed file types: ", did anyone specify the allowed types in the server software?
If no type is specified, its going to delete all types instantly, so someone needs to specify jpegs or png or something.

Bjorn et al, do you have plans to fix the posting-images problem within the next few weeks or months? Would contributions of money help?
Thanks!

yes ive been trying to send money too. but the paypal button is broken.

There are plans to fix it but the only sensible solution is to replace the forum software and that is quite a lot of work to do properly. Chris is doing all the work and he is very busy. Donations always help, it will probably not do much to speed up the process unless the sum is quite large.

what is a "quite large sum".

This is the closest guess I can make... To create the required free time then it would have to replace the money lost by not working on something else. So if it takes a few weeks of work to fix the forum, what would it cost to hire someone to do that kind of work full time for a few weeks?

Thank you, forum administrators, for your volunteer time.
When we get easy pictures again, it will be icing on the cake.

yes certainly, i dont want to seem ungrateful. this has never been a profitable venture for anyone.

thats why im thinking to get the pictures back we users could band together and fund a professional web "fixer" for this one time need. indiegogo, go fund me, or the pay pal link.

It's been almost three more months without inline pictures, except for doing it the hard way.
Makes me very sad, although plain text in English can certainly get our messages through.
Pictures can replace a lot of words, and add richness to the forum experience.

Are any administrators, or technically savvy volunteers, seeing light at the end of the tunnel?
What are the chances that familiar functionality (until about six months ago) will come back within the next six months?

For better or worse, my own visits and posts have been much less frequent than in previous years.
Subjectively, it looks like I am not alone in that behavior.
Do 4hv traffic statistics show the signature of a once-vibrant forum that's now circling the drain?

p.s. IMHO, the captcha challenge is minor compared to the Attach file(s) / image(s) dialog
whose list of "Allowed file types" is empty.

i think a "go fund me" is in order, i cant donate using the normal button.
