Graphics card repair.
Chris Cristini, Thu Nov 08 2018, 04:10PMI started repairing Graphics cards with great success mostly older NVIDIA cards for practice. I started moving up to new Higher end cards and its mostly the same as older tech just more refined the biggest problem with this is the Proprietary nature of NVIDIA/AMD and how they love to use ICs with no P/N making it very hard to repair For example I purchased A for repair Sapphire Nitro R9 390 from E Bay for $75.10 its a bit high for a bad card but it will resell working. The problem with this card is it was used for parts on another card and the parts that where removed of course are Proprietary no name crap I should have known better when I contacted Sapphire for information they are not allowed share that information and they told me to get my money back from the seller or throw it away? Really what a world we live in. Any way the information I found online from studying pictures of PCBs this missing I.C is the APL5930 Linear Regulator and to justify my assumption I will check voltage on Pads 5-6 VCNTL-VIN and Ground to insure some success. another thing I will have to look in to is the missing SMD component just above the PCIE Power I think it is a current shunt resistor but not sure it could be a fuse.
The SMD that goes in the PCI Section is the same as the SMDs marked R in the 8pin power section.
I know im not the only one to do this But with some of my progress In the development of the Biped robot which is at a complete halt due to it being mistreated and destroyed by my kids :( not a big deal any way I need to rethink my approach on the physical side of things.

Its strange to me that this card provides HDMI Output and actually accelerates Graphics but windows wont detect the card so I will see what happens when I install the APL5930 IC. And replace this NB671GQ Step down converter? I am thinking that beat up inductor is OK what do you guys think I definitely think who ever worked on this card had no business doing so :)
I checked the components around the AEAE 212 (NB671GQ) and it seems they used the Typical application lol.

C104 looks like it was removed? Not sure if it was part of the AEAE 212 circuit.

It may be for filtering the input there are so many questionable caps on graphics cards for example you could remove several caps and notice that nothing changed how ever when you get in to overclocking you will notice stability issues. I am glad none of the Core/MEM VRMs where hacked up like this as those are the real important bits I may not be able to resell this one even if I fix it proper I don't feel it would be ethical.
I will most likely under clock this and try for more efficiency and have a decent amount of VRam For rendering its not really something I would use for DL although 2560 Stream processors is not to bad as the GTX1080 Non TI has 2560 Cuda Cores. Also if I wanted to use AMD I would use 4 Underclocked R9 290s because it is the same GPU as the 390 but half the VRam and half the price.

This is the smallest chip I've ever soldered. It is a backlight driver for an LCD display on a proto build. A bit of skill and a lot of luck.

WOW that is pretty small lol Thanks for that link I will keep them in mind I am discovering this card is not worth it But its great for the experience. I can get cad for the stencil design I have used Eagle at work I could use some practice for sure lol

Well since the 390 is on hold I can get to work on this R9 Fury I cant wait to work with the HBM sadly its only 4 GB But High bandwidth :)
It was scary Cleaning the Paste off as I was worried about destroying the Interposer Sapphire included a protective plastic :) I think this one is heat death or something I found no visible damage. Edit I may have to get a custom stencil made lol fun.

Well I put it in my test PC and the R9 Fury has no issues? lol I feel bad for the seller as it could have been a power delivery issue. It works good even with an 1150MHZ over clock over 1050 stock GPU stress test for 2 Hrs @ 84C seems high to me but I read that all R9 series cards are space heaters so I will either sell it or keep it is far more power than the 390 for things other than gaming.
