Phase controller help

I’m finally at the point where I have to reach out for help.
I’m trying to build a phase controller for my SRSG. Where I’m falling short is the big picture I guess you could say. Ive been looking at the diagram on hvtesla.. it shows the normal variac output then underneath it there’s a diagram for the phase controller.. aside from the resistor, fuse and capacitor, I’m confused with the wiring from the motor into the variac. On my variac, I have two spots to plug in whatever load it may be... am I just plugging in the hot from the motor (along with the resistor, capacitor, etc) into the variacs output then the neutral to a different AC source? I’ve spent many hours just looking at the diagram trying to see it, but I can’t. I apologize if this question has already been answered, but I could really use some help on this one.

There are 3 output terminals for the variac. The first one is connected to the wiper arm. The second one is connected to one end of the variac windings. The third one is connected to the other end of the variac windings. Aside from the other components, you want to connect the hot terminal of your motor to the wiper arm connector. Connect the neutral terminal of your motor to neutral of your power line. For the input power hot connection to the variac, select the variac winding end connection that will allow you to rotate the knob clockwise to yield increasing inductance (more winding turns as you rotate the knob). If you pick the other end of the variac windings, you will have to rotate the knob CCW to get increasing inductance. This will also work but CW knob rotation makes more intuitive sense than CCW rotation. When you are finished, one end of the variac winding connections will be unused.
The bottom diagram merely adds some safety features and doesn't affect the functionality. When I built my phase controller I used the bottom diagram. I used relays to implement the safety features.

Whelp..she actually works! I expected a fuse to blow when I first turned it on, but that didn’t happen. Thanks again for the help!
