eBay $2 "15kV generator" kit improvements

Looking for suggestions to better this circuit and add regulation. These chinese kits are cheap and I thought a good place to start. I drew this schematic.

My goal is an adjustable HV power supply for ESD testing. Around 5-40kVDC low current to charge the 100-1000pF capacitor modelling human body capacitance. I have a HV multiplier with 10nF 15kV caps and 2CL75 diodes.

I was thinking a 555-timer with PWM and some HV output feedback to regulate it? The primary has low turns for the 3.7V power.

Honestly, it's a very crude circuit.
As for your idea for a 555 based driver, it could work but would likely suffer from high losses unless you implement some kind of biploar drive, which would also improve the HV output with some degree of increased coil heating.
Personally, if I just wanted a rough and ready HV source, I'd just replace the input with a Mazilli [aka ZVS] driver

But if you want to, go ahead and go for it. It's your project, but please share your results!

You'd be better off using something like a UC3845 PWM chip to make a flyback - its got everything you need built in, which a 555 does not.

yes I support this comment. If you look I think you'll find i have circuits already posted here nearly what you want that use these ic's.

I think a ZVS circuit would not work, as I want to vary the output voltage instead of running it full tilt.
I'm going to see if rewinding the primary is possible, it seems built for 3.7V and I think push-pull would work better.

Fair enough. My thought was that after power on, the input voltage could become your control source - vary that and control the output in turn.

I know I'm late to the response party, life really caught me there for a while, but any updates?

Would it be possible to wire two or more in series to increase voltage output, or in parallel to increase current?
