Lifter Mark IV

Conundrum, Thu Jul 19 2018, 07:26AM

Hi, working on a 4th generation ionocraft idea here.

this one needs similar voltage and current but the efficiency is radically higher allowing in principle
a self-contained setup which can be compatible with power beaming via 10.8um laser.
Power supply is also unusual and uses piezotransformers so it is far lighter than earlier units.

Its not quite working yet but it could be a significant step forwards.

More soon!

I've been wondering about an idea for these lifters. Why not use the same concept as the blade less fan?

Fan

Instead of using a fan to supply the air, you could suspend the ionising wire above the airfoil and then only place conductive aluminium on the inside section of the ring? Or maybe the whole ring should be covered.

Thoughts?

I forgot about these lifters. I built on years ago but had poor results.
Found some good info here https://aip.scitation.org/doi/full/10.1063/1.4890353
Mostly voltage / current to weight ratios.

Thanks for the inspiration.

ive been working on mine before 1998. ive got some ideas and so far ive got some calculations that i havent seen others use. your talking about "entrainment" which i think is premature before we solve other issues.

Hi, alas still can't get all the parts.
If anyone does have any old piezo inverters (ie from Sony Vaio or Panasonic laptops or some LCDs) please let me know.
I have some ideas to add light pre-ionization now 260nm diodes are a thing.
(about £13 each)

EDIT: you can get a variant of PZTs which put out >9KV instead of 1800V but they are absurdly expen$ive.
I am also working on another version using pulse inversion to get a slightly more efficient driver that operates more like
a Tesla Coil, but the problem is lack of parts that can withstand >900kHz at 2KV.
Though there are GaN FETs now which can take 500kHz at 39A this is more intended for applications like RFID portal readers
than something this exotic.
