Substituting flyback transformer for CRT monitor

nzoomed, Wed May 24 2017, 03:58AM

Im needing help to figure out if its possible to replace the flyback transformer on a CRT monitor for a vintage computer im restoring.

It blew up with a bright flash and a bit of smoke, but i have no idea if i can easily swap another in its place.
Do most have the same pinouts? I see they are in all shapes and sizes, so its more if it can fit directly in the board i guess.

Its a Sampo FEA209.

TIA

I did not see your model mentioned, maybe it is similar to one of these ? Link2

it probably very well is, but i dont think its as simple as swapping one over, even if it solders right in place.

If it looks the same and the pin configuration looks the same, they probably are electrically similar.

If not, you need chassis part# to find manual/schematics to be sure

What text can you see on the flyback transformer ?

Quite some time ago I worked in a monitor service facility. I had cases with identical looking/pinout/size flyback transformers but they were incompatible.

What caused it to blow up ? You could test the drive device. Monitors and TV sets with flyback issues
were serviced with the help of analyzers. This prevented just burning out new parts, while troubleshooting.

The Spanish firm HR Diemen are the world's largest suppliers of replacement/equivalent FBT.

Where there is an HR Diemen equivalent, they supply a full pin-out plan, with key voltages and currents, on a pdf sheet.

HR Diemen part search is here: Link2

Only thing written is SAMPO FEA209 on a sticker, nothing else I can see.
I will add a photo later.

Yes ive tried them, they responded and told me its not available.

Dunno why they have it listed there still. I doubt there is much market for these parts nowdays. Something tells me they scrapped all their stock, its not like every screen in the world used that part, I would expect some to have had some stock remaining.

I cant see any PDF sheet there for download, but their part number that crosses over is HR 46574

I have no idea what caused it to fail, other than just age, shortly before it blew, i could hear a bit of a squealing noise, and then a few mins later, it would make a popping sound and each time the screen would flicker, it got worse to the point that no picture hapened and i saw some arcing inside the monitor from the back, i quickly switched it off and saw that the flyback had a hole burnt on the side, so i assume the secondary had gone on it.

most likely one of the caps in the voltage doubler inside then a diode or two has gone to the silicon heaven. Usually the windings are completely potted in plastic and give very little trouble

OK, well the unit will need replacing.

Hopefully something will turn up

You can try contacting the flyback manufactures (there are some on aliexpress) asking what a new one made for purpose costs.

They seem to be rather willing to do a one-off for you.
