If you like Bipolar Tesla Coils

Here's the link to the build of our Hellcat Bipolar Tesla coil @ Link2

Kind regards,

Wonderful pictures of a nice piece of coil.

Do you have more pictures detailing the bridge build?

WOW !

Nice work.

just curious, what attracts you to bipolar coils ?
(I've never made one, and never will at your scale :)

P.S. in terms of mechanical strength, left-right forces on the secondary go to bending the 'tombstones'
maybe some sort of diagonal struts / triangles ... at least for transport/movement.

P.P.S. how is the audio with 27 kHz resonant frequency ?
(a very sharp, low-pass audio filter with a cut-off of 10 to 12 kHz before your 'modulator' may help)
(something like two of these in series, datasheet gives an example)

Thank you for the kind words!

As far as photos of the actual bridge go; I'm not sure what I have in my archive.

And for the second question: Originally struts, bracing, etc. was part of the project (they were in fact manufactured) and considered as a "must have" requirement for holding the Tesla Coil intact. We discovered after installation of the secondary that the Poly carbonate (Lexan) tombstones were so strong, that no extra bracing would not be required.

Third question: Why Bipolar? My answer:

1) no earth ground required; only equipment grounding.

2) very low overall power consumption. It appears that the bipolar type of Tesla Coils draw about one fourth the power of a similar output quarter wave resonator for the same amount of spark. (At least this has been our experience)

Last but not least:

Audio at 27khz: Incredible Bass; sounds like a 500kv substation switch being opened, it's bad ass!

Kind regards,
Dr. Hank

How exactly do these work in relation to a normal DRSSTC?
Is there anything different i have to do with the driver etc?

I imagine the physics are alot different in the coil ratio?

To answer your question, they both work the same. The bridges are interchangeable.

I have always wondered how one should tune a bipolar DRSSTC. Could you shine some light on it for us please? :)

Yes im wondering the same thing.

I might build one, i wonder if there is a way of multiplexing a MIDI stereo signal through one in such a way that you could use it as a left and right channel on the same unit?

Is this possible?

I noticed you put metal flake in the varnish on the secondary. Wouldn't this greatly increase the chance of insulation breakdown?

Are you sure you didn't trigger the 1 Nov earthquake? :)

Your shop/lab/garage/living room is outstanding.
