Post Your Cool Video Here!

Mads Barnkob, Wed Sept 16 2015, 11:08AM

I thought it might be cool to see other's neat videoes. The video can be anything as long as it is impressive/pretty/impossible.

The rules are:
If it is "photoshopped" it must say so,
And it must be taken/edited by you.
Also it must follow the rules of the forum of course.

I'm interested to see what pops up...

Greatly inspired by the Post Your Cool Pic Here! thread.

Some offshore helicopter videos

Late evening arrival at Gorm

Shuttling between two platforms in heavy 18-20 m/s wind and about 6 meter waves. It is hard to see, but they are really that big, just looks small when everything is big :)

Wow. smile

Well, I think my video isn't even close, but interesting in historical perspective.
That's Crimea several months before russian troops came in and annexed the peninsula.
It shows how it's peaceful sometimes right before war begins.

In the video itself I'm riding cableway which leads to the Ai-Petri, top of Crimean mountains, 1234 meters above sea. smile

That is some long cable right there! What a long and beautiful ride.

A special prototype linear 8 cavity blow moulder machine for PET bottles, it was so impossible to get running stable that eventually it was discontinued and you can only get a 4 cavity today :)

This is one of the 2 in existence.

Cavitation! I got to play with work's 16,000fps camera so I brought my cavitation-whisky-bottle of science that day! The bottle was filled with water then heated in a microwave (with the lid off) until it was boiling, then I put the lid on and cooled it off lowering the pressure to the point that it is almost just about to boil. One good whack on the cap and cavities break out.

That is cool, assuming you did 30 fps, that should be around 8,25ms long.

Do you have a special light source for that camera to avoid flicker?

I use 500w halogen lights for most of my high speed filming but this was done with a "50w" LED panel that had reasonable filtering on the PSU.

Another video from offshore.

Here I am taking off from a hotel rig called Haven and fly around the Danish installation called Dan F, the largest and one of the oldest fields in the Danish part of the North Sea.

Feather-legged lace weaver (Uloborus plumipes) making a new web, what is different from normal spider webs is that this species uses carding with their legs, which can be seen working really fast in the video.

This was my first attempt at time lapse stuff ,

I used a cheap camera and Arduino to trigger it to take a picture , it was set at 1 picture every 10 minuets , video is 9 days worth .

On my way home from work I passed a offshore wind farm.

The reef contains the first large scale offshore wind farm in the world, Horns Rev 1 (160 MW from 2002).

80 turbines are laid out as an oblique rectangle of 5 km x 3.8 km (8 horizontal and 10 vertical rows). The distance between turbines is 560 m in both directions.

The shortest and most crazy rain storm I have ever witnessed, it lasted only a total of 3 minutes and left the streets flooded. I only managed to film 1½ minute of it, but that is still the part where you can see it picks up in pace and almost dies out in the end.

I think this might be a power line arc but still cool nevertheless. It appears that whatever this is seems to be picking up debris and ionizing it.

I build a Paul Trap from stuff you all own. Totally worth the half hour of work.

Nik, Great results from a simple experiment, i will definately try that :) Great video.

You only need the video code in the embed tag.

Here is a small bug that took long to film in focus, while it did its rather special recovery from stuck on back.

Neat experiment, Nik. Did you use a line driven NST as high voltage source?

Re: Post Your Cool Video Here!
Nik, Sun Dec 25 2016, 05:48PM

Good recovery for that bug, I wonder how similar its walk cycle is to it's recovery flail.

The NST was on a variac to bring the output down to ~3-5kv. It worked better to start with a low voltage then crank it up and catch particles once they are close to being trapped. I also put ~20Mohm in series with each leg because I had to manipulate things near the electrodes, not there to make it "safe," just to make it less deadly should a light or camera get too close by accident.
