Heat seeking Nerf missile project

Hey guys,

I am starting to burn out with work and needed a fun project to take the edge off, so I have been working on a heat seeking Nerf missile. The idea is to use a cheap PIR sensor to somehow lock on to an actual person. I have to make it incredibly light too, because I can imagine a soft piece of foam hurting with enough mass behind it. I already built a massive air cannon to accommodate a 4" diameter projectile. I need some way of putting the seeker head up front, but with some kind of shock absorber so that the impact doesn't hurt. Any ideas?

Well first, is there a way to detect a person? is a PIR good enough ? Then youll need a microprocessor driven guidance to fins. not sure if PIDs are good enough.

if only the sensor is in the tip, and its light, sort of recessed that may not hurt much. There are ultra micro servos i could show you too for the vanes/fins.

These IR cams work well:

Short range turret launched ballistics are relatively simple to predict if the mass of the projectiles and drive force is consistent.

A guidance system may fall under export restrictions.

Best of luck,

So sparkfun finnally got the LEPTON, i and someone else here on the forum were trying to reverse engineer the iphone back-pack one.

You can now get them at Digikey somewhat cheaper

Though the launch of the new 160x120 Flir One means you may pick up old Flir Ones even cheaper soon for sensor harvesting.
I reverse-engineered it, a little before the datasheets became available.
