The deep blue coloration could be interpreted as a low energy analog of Cherenkov radiation.. ?!

essentially a bandgap emission effect?

EDIT: wonder if someone should check for bursts of X-rays?

The simple explanation is that solvated electrons are blue

Cherenkov radiation is a relativistic effect and there's no reason to suppose that it would be involved here.
