Multi stage rail gun? What are the advantage doing this?

Would having multiple stages in a railgun have any advantages?

So for example: instead of having say a 4 foot long rail, have 4 1 foot rails one after another?

Have the same power supply on all of them say 50v 100amp (no caps). What are the advantages?

I'm thinking the multi stage gun would have the advantage of less resistance since rails are shorter. Also a lot less magnetic force pushing fails apart right? Would such design have a higher top speed penitential, or no?

Disadvantages are of course more complicated and expensive design.

Well, you could run them at progressively higher (fixed) voltages, that way the acceleration would be more even.

Otherwise the field weakening effect of the back-emf will reduce the acceleration towards the end of the rail.
