Useful, but not well known ICs

Thomas W, Thu Sept 19 2013, 07:02PM

Hey guys, i was thinking....

Lets make a thread on not so well known ICs that are still very useful!

Any you submit, il add up on a list here :)

Single chip offline power supply controllers:
The TOP233YN, a 30 - 50W Offline Switcher
The TOP246YN, a 90 - 125W version of the above

Regulators:

The LM2578, a 2 - 40v 750mA max Switching Regulator

The LM2576, a 3A step-down Switching Regulator
The LM2676, a 3A step-down Switching Regulator
(both unisolated DC-DC converter IC's but the difference's are that the LM2676 has an internal FET switch and runs at 260khz, whilst the LM2576 uses an NPN transistor switch and runs at 52khz. Both are rated for 3 amps switch current)

PMW/ SMPS Controllers:
The KA3525 a SMPS Controller
The TL494 the ever famous PWM IC

Function Generators:
The XR2206 Monolithic Function Gen, range of 0.01Hz to more than 1MHz.
The ICL8038 Waveform Gen/ VCO, range of 0.001Hz to more than 300kHz
The MAX038 HF Waveform Generator (40MHz max)

Oscillators:
The LTC1799 1kHz to 33MHz Resistor Set SOT-23 Oscillator

Amplifiers:
A MAR-6 DC-2GHz monolithic amplifier

Other:
The LM1881 Video Sync Seperator
The NE564 50 MHz Phase-locked loop

Well here is one of my favorites seems to be better than The TL494
KA3525 SMPS Controller Link2 .

I have a question who elts has an over whelming amount of Quad Op Amps from DE soldering old used circuit boards.

do you know of application notes for this one? I have a bunch of them!

I can not seem to find any application Notes but with a little bit of searching you could find all the information you would need on Google. Link2

MAR-6+

DC-2GHz monolithic amplifier. Link2,d.d2k

This is a super little three-terminal Darlington RF amplifier that is very easy to set up and get good results from. It's cheap too!

Interesting! i wouldnt have any use for it, but il add it up there :)
2,200 years lifetime before faliure... wow

LM1881, old IC but still used in some set top boxes.

I dont see any use for that IC at all for anything other then that specific application.... blah, added anyway!

NE564: high frequency (50 MHz) PLL. May be useful for some HF SSTCs, where the standard 4046 no longer works well.

LM2578.

They're great for small battery powered buck/boost converters. Works even for two regular alkaline batteries!

XR2206
ICL8038
MAX038 - Function generator IC's very fun to play with, and old standards for small test equipment.

Link2

Pretty neat little oscillator chip!

LM2576 and LM2676.

They are both unisolated DC-DC converter IC's but the difference's are that the LM2676 has an internal FET switch and runs at 260khz, whilst the LM2576 uses an NPN transistor switch and runs at 52khz. Both are rated for 3 amps switch current.

Of-course you could always use an external switch!

But both of them are great linear regulator replacements, and if you really need low ripple an external PI filter can get you well below 5mV of ripple.

Updated :) keep giving me more, it helps if you give me the datasheet too (saves me time)

If we get a large enough list, il put it up on the wiki or somthing :)

KA3525 is just a Samsung clone of the OnSemi SG3525. Similar idea to the TL494 (also cloned as the Daewoo DBL494)

The XR2206, ICL8038 and MAX038 are all obsolete as far as I know. I've designed a few DDS-based replacements for them.

I like the LM257x series.

Indeed, you can still get ahold of them easly enough for now :)

Don't look at me, I can make a 555 blink 2 LEDs with my eyes closed, but other than that, I'm left in the dust as far as chips go...

Me too thanks to your recommendation of them a while back cheesey I like how an extra op-amp can be used to "trick" the IC into supplying a constant current (great for driving those 10 watt+ LED's).

The only reason I mentioned the LM2676 too is that the older LM2576 can dissipate a good few watts when it has to switch higher currents (got one driving some warm white LED strips in my room). The LM2676 (IMO) was a better choice for this application, although I am sure you can much better IC's these days.
