does primary shape afect performance?

If a primary is conical insted of circular does that afect coupling? I would think circular gives beter coupling depending on proximity to the secondary. I would think that conical would reduce the potensial for flashing. what is the consensus? thanks N.B.

I have used a flat spiral primary and a helical primary on my tesla and there was a big diffrence. The helical primary gave alot higher coupleing but was far more prone to primary-secondary strikes. The flat spiral gave lower coupleing but was alot easier to adjust and never flashed over from the primary to the secondary.

Primary shape will just effect coupling. Pancake coils work just as good as conical as well as a vertical helix. The difference lies is where the secondary needs to be in relation to the primary for optimum coupling. I think JimmyH even used Al flashing for a Ribbon type primary on one of his DRSSTCs.

did someone trying to make a drsstc with a flat pancake primary?? never seen one before, only helical and conical shaped ones

thanks guys. from an obsevational veiew I would think that helical offers the best coupling and conical offers best flash resistance. but in turn if the primary is closer or farther up the secondary that can afect coupling. I am working on coil that is 35.5" high and 6.25" in diamiter and am looking for auptimum sise and shape. N.B.

Helical primary can be made as flashover resistant as flat type, if you put secondary high
enough (just over the top turn of primary, like steve ward did on his DRSSTC 1)
Never make helical primary that overlaps secondary significantly.

Inverse conical is good compromise between coupling and flashover but it is mechanically somewhat more difficult.

Hi,

Gerry suggests the primary form make effect coupling and racing arcs:
