5000RPM in 5 mins

Tesladownunder, Wed Aug 30 2006, 03:50AM

This is one simple motor and fast to make.
Really only took minutes to make it run. Running here at 5800 RPM. It ran for 2:35 mins once the power is off because the bearing is only a point with much of the weight taken off by gravity.

The extensive construction details of this homopolar motor are here.

Hah! That's very cool. Now someone needs to do it with +50A and a several pount magnet.

Awesome, I just made one with bits lying on my desk

It's stuck to the edge of my desk, still spinning away as I type this cheesey

Pretty Cool. I've got to try that when I get home

I have tested it too. How to impress the family ?

Hehehehehe... i have some very powerful "threaded" magnets off a bath kit (???!!!!!) which may be suitable with some careful pwnage with Mr Dremel :)

DO the edges of the magnet have to be exposed for this to work?

I made one at work with some NIB magnets we had lying around, and everyone thought it was pretty cool smile No promotion though wink

So still only 3 replications of this experiment? Is that because 4HV members can't find 5 mins or cant find a screw? Even Steve Connor could find one shades

I dont have any round NIB magnets cry but I'll keep my eye out for one, this is too easy to pass up.

The reverse is also true. By spinning the magnet, power can be taken off the axis and circumference. Sometimes known as the faraday or homopolar generator. JlnLabs shows a small one here. Link2

From the rules of this forum:

Tesla did some homopolar generator stuff and has a patent related to it.
The biggest one however, was built here in Australia and stored 500MJ. Just great for those 2MA experiments. I am old enough to remember it being used as a railgun supply.

I made it work with a proper PSU instead of a battery. Even at 0.5V it welded the bits together all the time so it was a complete pain. A NiMh battery works a lot better.

I was too afraid to use a nimh, at least with my fingers holding the wire cheesey

well I tried...not much response even after I built one in 30 seconds in front of my Dad.

"So it's just a motor then?" ... "um....yeah, but this is no ordinary motor." ....... "it... it breaks all known laws of physics as well" ... 10 mins later - "I guess we still have a lot to learn then" cheesey

I set up the homopolar generator and used my drill to spin it. The results were not amasing but they were results none the less. At 1200rpm I got 1mv at 3-4mA.

I am guessing that there is a magnetic field set up in the screw. What is this exerting a force against to setup the spin?

Better = faster. Any idea how fast?

Does anyone want to comment on how this actually works? What force vec tors are present?

Hello? Fleming's Left Hand Rule?

Unfortunately, I don't own sophisticated equipment required to replicate the experiment..

Don't have any round Nd magnets..

It's 20 years since I had anything to do with the left hand rule but here goes.
Basically the magnetic field is directed in lines of force from North to South ie along the axis of rotation -say your index finger pointing downwards.
The current goes in towards the centre of the axis of rotation, like pointing with your middle finger at the magnet.
The force exerted on the conductor at the point the wire touches the magnet is your thumb and it moves at a tangent to the contact point of the magnet and hence rotates.

I ordered some rare earth disc magnets on Friday. I'm going to show this to my daughter. I understand that these magnets are very strong.
