What would the most efficient single coilgun stage look like?

If I wanted to make the most efficient single coilgun stage possible, what would it look like? how long would the projectile/coil be? How wide? I would want to stay below saturation, no? I've also heard that the coil is the most efficient when the projectile is between (1/3) and (2/3) of the way into the coil. Is that true?

What would the size of it be? Are bigger or smaller coilguns more efficient ?

In short, what's the most efficient single coil you can think of?

Superconducting one.

I'd say timing would be more important to avoid suckback. Otherwise, one designed to give the projectile a maximal impulse given its starting velocity without saturating the projectile (a small project I should get to some time).

That's funny, wasn't expecting that.

As of now, It would appear that Yadersen's non-polar capacitor setup is working the most efficiently, although it utilizes multiple stages.

A single stage without reusing energy leftovers shown around 8% of efficiency.
But in general, the less energy is pushed into the coil, the higher the efficiency - that's why multistaging is so cool.
More energy may be driven to higher stages as they dissipate less due to shorter pulse. In other words, better to drive first stages with less energy and gradually increase the doze for subsequent stages.

This is true even once you go below the iron's saturation point (measured in amp-turns per meter)?

This will not be a gun. Even not a toy for 3+.

And I believe that's with the non-polar capacitor benchset.

Typical (basic) polar-cap benchsets run 1-3% efficiency.

May be 3-5% if damper diode is not used, but it will slowly kill your caps.
