actetone peroxide

After reading the news I wanted to know from those with the experience if the terrorists could have really successfully mixed a batch up on a plane. My understanding is that one needs to wait overnight for the crystals to precipitate and that it is usually done while keeping the mixture very cold. Afterwards, one needs to wash and dry the compound.
Of course, maybe they were hoping to mix a lot and get the mixture to blow up from it overheating.
Does anyone have anything to contribute to this? Has anyone actually made this?

Triacetone triperoxide wouldn't necessarily need to be mixed onboard... but good point about control/overheating.
They're reallowing laptops on the planes. Lithium polymer battery explosion, anyone? :P
Triacetone ("mother of satan") triperoxide is probably a little unstable to be a very practical explosive for amateurs like us. ^^

you are correct, the crystals do need to dry before they are sensitive. I don't even think AP could do catastrophic damage to a jumbo jet.

I don't think it would need to cause damage. A firecracker going off in a jet wouldn't cause any damage, yet would cause extreme panic and would make the news. However, as far as I know, they couldn't be prepared on the plane and detonated.
I tried making this a while ago, but didn't really get any results, probably becasue of low quality reagents(low % peroxide, not pure acid or acetone). I don't think this is really feasible. The reaction didn't really heat up a signifigant amount when I did this, but, then again, it didn't work, so what can I say. Most heat generated was from adding acid to the water, which was not nearly enough heat for an explosion. I suppose I could try again that I have better equipment/chemicals/more experience, but experience teaches me that there are better things to do with my time.

Also, it doesn't become really powerful until its dry, so that kinda rules out manufacture on a plane. You'd be kinda stuffed if you were asked to taste that 'baby formula' with an excess of H2O2 in it
In Australia, Dell had to withdraw a certain laptop, as it could spontaneously combust - burst into flames or explode on the person's lap!! Look's like they've given terrorists a hint
