EMI filters and ground

Part Scavenger, Tue Aug 15 2006, 01:48AM

I've heard of people using EMI filters from Comps/TVs/Monitors as ground (well, so they can connect to the mains ground) in their DRSSTC's. How exactly do I do that? I don't want to fry anything you know.

Thanks

I merely guess filter's capacitors are used to couple base ground to mains or so.

Anyway hooking high power coils to mains grond is a bad idea as inductance of long wires causes large disturbances and voltage gradients to appear along the line (even if building has a proper ''gren wire'' grounding).

I use a emi filter for my medium DRSSTC to filter the incoming 120vac for the logic supply transformer. But for my small DRSSTC I just grounded the secondary to mains ground and I havent had any problems. My medium DRSSTC does cause havoc within the house so I use a dedicated RF ground for it (6ft copper stake).

Oops, I forgot to add I'm going to do a small coil, but would it work up to something like 300-500W?
