Boost converter
ZakWolf, Wed Feb 29 2012, 11:58PMI am building a compact pistol coil gun and need a very small circuit for charging.
Sorry to ask, I have searched 4hv and Google for 2 days now and having found what i want.
I would like a boost converter that utilizes a irf510 and a 555, or just a small transformer driven by the irf510 that puts out ~400v.
Input voltage ~3-6v
At least something better then those awful flash circuits.
Im trying to do this with scrap parts i have.
Any help is much appreciated.

I used this and a 4 stage multiplier and got 200v with 6v in.
Is there any way to make output more? remove a resistor or change a value ?

Boost converters are pretty easy and can be made very small. There are examples all over the internet of their theory. Read up on that and you'll be able to put one together that should be able to meet your needs.

.75"x.75"x.5"? That's certainly a size restriction. The only things I could imagine fitting into that are a 555 driver with a camera transformer (as is or carefully rewound), a single transistor circuit like the original camera circuit, or a boost converter. A boost converter might have the best power output and will easily allow for charging regulation because they tend to use the 555 timer. two well known examples can be found at and (2nd or 3rd variants)

An ATX transformer will offer loads of power but a smaller one could also be used, especially if the battery pack is not able to provide hundreds of watts peak.

An ATX transformer will offer loads of power but a smaller one could also be used, especially if the battery pack is not able to provide hundreds of watts peak.

I have a mini core .5X.5X.5 that i can rewind.... very tricky
Can i power the ZVS with 6v and can i use irf510 mosfets ? wimpy little things

You can buy small purpose build flyback transformers for capacitor charging by Wurth and Coilcraft, they are a couple bucks, fall right in the voltage range you want and are compact.
Some people here have used them before :

coilcraft samples them for free. They've got lots of inductors as well.
