injector

i am trying to work out the best way to make a semi auto mechanism for my new multi stage coilgun. I am looking for suggestions/links to other similar projects and ideas. i need something to smack my projectiles out of the clip, down the barrel and to trigger the optical switch.

would like a 12v car lock soloniod work Link2

Gravity fed? design it so that when you press the trigger, it pulls a pin which allows a slug to fall into the chamber. or a pump action sort of thing where the pump pulls the pin, then the trigger shoots it. A pump action coil gun... XD that just SOUNDS awesome!!

it is not gravity feed, attached is a design i made. orange is the nerf gun clip i modded . yellow is the cap chargers. i have yet to make the stock which is where the injector solinoid will be. as you can see i need to get the shels moving forward out of the clip to activate the 3 optical switches. i want to be able to inject the shells with just the battery and not use additional caps if i dont have too.

Any kind of solenoid should do; you're not looking for efficiency. Just make sure it has a spring in it to pull the plunger back in after it kick the projectile out of the clip.

You can turn a pull solenoid into a push by drilling out through the back of the solenoid and attaching an aluminum bar to the plunger. then put pins in the aluminum and plunger to restrict the range of motion you want (and so it doesn't fly out either end of the solenoid.) last, add a spring between the solenoid and the plunger pin so it returns to it's initial position.
Or you could find/buy yourself a push solenoid and, if necessary, rewind it to pack a bigger punch.

Why not make a spring-loaded mechanism? I imagine that would be much easier than using a solenoid. You could use a tube with a cap in one end, and a spring fastened to the cap. Shove your projectile into the tube, and lock it with a pin or something.

I like your design, it looks very efficient in terms of space and parts usage. I think a 12V solenoid with a spring return would be the best way to inject your projectiles if you want to have semi-automatic operation. You'll just want to be sure that the solenoid can hit your projectiles with enough force to knock them out of the magazine and all the way to your first coil.

my solenoid came in. what do you think the 3rd lead is for?, there was no spec sheet on the site when i ordered it... do i need to put a back emf protection diode to protect the battery? or jus hook it up?

The third lead may just be connected to the case, can you check it with a multimeter? You should connect an anti-parallel diode across the solenoid terminals, since it is an inductor. This is necessary to protect your switch rather than the battery.

it is connected to the case. what would be the purpose of it?

It's just a safety thing for electronic appliances that use earth ground. It prevents any charge from building up on the case or chassis relative to the physical ground that the user is standing on to avoid electrical shocks. You don't need to worry about it for your battery powered gun.

See section V for a good explanation: Link2

injector is working. trigger to 555 to driver to mosfet nxt step to make a custom one to give it some more punch..
