Say Hi

Tesladownunder, Fri Feb 03 2006, 12:56AM

Just a general intro thread for testing and whatever comments.

Just a few random comments. I get the option of posting thread as a sticky. Am I in God mode (Ooops - Mod mode) or does everyone get this choice :?
(Now that I have posted, it is rather obvious in the profile.)

It might take a while to get used to the bilious smileys but that's what you get with a light blue skin I guess.

Attachments are up to 1M - good. What are the .png and .gz filetypes?

The feelers on this little cricket were as long as my hand.
(edit: HEY! Chris stole my cricket sad - but reposted it later)

png - Portable network graphic...I think, a better unencumbered replacement for .gif

.gz = gnu zip, I think, compressed archive
Re: Say Hi
Dave Marshall, Fri Feb 03 2006, 11:57PM

Yeah, .png is an image format that allows transparent backgrounds like gifs, but with better color resolution (no ugly jagged edges). Windows users might not be so accustomed to them because for some inexplicable reason, windows doesn't properly support them. They come out looking like crap in winblowz.

.gz is an open source file compression system. Its used extensively in linux, and is commonly referred to as a 'tarball' as the file extension is usually filename.tar.gz or tar.gz2. Alot of binary installation packages and source code come as tarballs for non-rpm enabled linux distros.

Is image size still limited to 475 pixels width?

Dan
Re: Say Hi
Chris Russell, Sat Feb 04 2006, 02:28AM

I am open to suggestions on size restrictions. Right now, it seems like 400 is the widest it can be, and have things still work on an 800 x 600 display.
Re: Say Hi
Alex, Sat Feb 04 2006, 03:31AM

I would like to see bigger images, but it's really not necissary. If you want a bigger image, you can always click to see the full size one.

Although the number of 800*600 users is decreasing, it's way more annoying for them to have to scroll sideways than it is for us to have to click to see a full size image.
Re: Say Hi
Chris, Sat Feb 04 2006, 03:54AM

475 pixels worked on the old board, I guess I'm not sure what the differences with formatting are on this board as opposed to that, but perhaps something like 475 or 480 (a nice even width) would be better. 400 is a little too small to show detail, and even if it's just barely out of range on an 800x600 display it would probably be acceptable, as long as you don't have to scroll to read the text. With the 400 pixel images, you can still read everything without scrolling down to about a 730 pixel wide window.
Re: Say Hi
Matt, Sat Feb 04 2006, 05:26AM

I say make thumbnails in the thread to a larger image. it looks better in the long run I would think.

You also alleviate the problem of people using a low bandwidth device, not having to download a 400k image, unless they want to.
Re: Say Hi
Tesladownunder, Sat Feb 04 2006, 08:40AM

I suspect that any change from autosized to 475 will make transferring the ** Add your Tesla coil thread here ** a bit tedious. I also have a very big folder of 475 pixel wide files.

Only 12.5% of hits to my site use 800 x 600 and a few of those were me. I don't mind scrolling across for the picture. I DO mind scrolling back and forth within each sentence. I suggest that as long as the text is OK, pic size could remain autosized to 475 if possible as a compromise between picture size and download speed.

Re: Say Hi
Dave Marshall, Sat Feb 04 2006, 04:42PM

Last I knew, the auto-size function had been disabled to enable faster load times and reduce resource consumption. Since we're on the same server, I would suspect that the same goes for the new forum.

I agree that 400 is a bit too small, and I also agree with TDU's assesment. So long as text is intact, if someone has to scroll a little bit for images, I wouldn't think it would be a big deal. Chris R, do you have the ability to detect screen resolution on the old forum? You could always just track all the hits from now till the 8th on the old forum and see if support for 800x600 is still necessary. If its less than 10% of the visitors who are stuck at 800x600, it might be a case of making things a little less convenient for a select few, while making things more convenient for the vast majority.

Hi everyone! I'm still wandering around trying to get the hang of the new forum system.
Re: Say Hi
Chris Russell, Sun Feb 05 2006, 01:00AM

Autoresize on the old forum had only been disabled for people not signed in.

Current statistics show something like 18% of 4hv.org users still using 800 * 600 resolution, so I am hesitant to cut support for them.

At any rate, these images that appear below posts are not meant to be full sized images. They are meant to be thumbnails. Post whatever size pictures you like, and the forum just scales them down a bit to protect the format of the board from being blown to smithereens by an unscaled four megapixel digital camera image. :) This also saves moderators from having to actually moderate image size.

TDU, there's no reason it should make your work tedious. You needn't worry about resizing images at all this way. Simply upload the full sized ones, and the forum will take care of the rest.

Edit: TDU, I also see you're directly linking to images as they are located on the old forum. This may be a bad idea, as these folders are going to be moved after the old forum is shut down.

Chris, my results were pretty consistent across browsers, in that I could get down to about 730 pixels without needing to scroll. The five pixels or so worth of loss is probably due to the nicer-looking layout. It's just ever so slightly less efficient with the space.

I tend to agree with Matt on this issue. Maybe the answer is to go with something really small, like 200 pixels. Then we are saving a TON of bandwidth, and we are emphasizing that it's just a thumbnail, and that you can click to get a full sized image.

Whoops, sorry TDU, I've killed your image in your post. Reposting it below...

That is a very good point. Some images are resized enough that they look crappy, but not so much that you'd think they were resized. I am in favor of the thumbnails idea.

P.S. the edit button works
Re: Say Hi

Looks good, me like :)

Not where weather to put this in the suggestions box or here but I noticed a few things... Mainly that links do not open in a new window (not sure if that was intentional or not, but will take some getting used to) and that when posting a pic the default size is 200 pixels as opposed to the 400 stated in the rules... Which to use? Also, the forum now supports files 10MB, but only takes zips and pics? Where is the audio/video?

Hi everyone, it's great to see the new board up!

I've got a question for the mods though: At the moment it seems everyone can create an account without any verification, is it going to stay like this or is it only to save the old 4HVers the hassle? I guess it would be a good idea to restrict applications in a weeks time or so, to keep up the high level of nonsense and chit-chat smile

/ me gets on knees and begs.

If you're going to do this, please, please make it a logical multiple of something or power of two, e.g. 256, 320, 480, 512, etc. 475 is a bit odd. Pretty please with cream and a cherry on the top?

I don't mean to bitch and moan, but I liked being able to see the text of the URL I'm going to without having to wave my mouse over it. Is it possible to reimplement this, or do you guys all prefer a girly arrow? hehehe :P

Another suggestion is relating to the inline smilies: currently they kill the flow of the text. You had awesome smilies on the "old" 4hv, which were the same height as the text (in pixels) when browser text-size/zoom and line-height were on default. Is it possible to pull this one off on the new forum?

It's the little things that hurt =P
Re: Say Hi
HV Enthusiast, Thu Feb 09 2006, 01:17PM

is there a way to insert a hyperlink into a thread and having it displayed as an actual web address as opposed to a green arrow?

i think its easier to have the hyperlink displayed as a a text hyperlink so its 1) readily visible, and 2) easily to see where its going other than having to move your mouse over it.

thanks

I'm watching this forum about a few months now, and started some HV projects of myself, including a 56joule cap-bank (Link2, some older ones, my MOT's: Link2 I am ATM building a TC with a friend of my, based on a 7,5KV 50mA NST power supply. Also I have been done a lot of low voltage experiements, I am starting to etch and using microcontrollers. Maybe in the near future I will start soon with some little experiements with liquid nitrogen2, I have already have been up to some little chemistry experiements.

Some general questions:
How did you find us?
By a link my friend gave me when we were researching on tc's and cap banks.

Of course to post comments, as questions and discuss.

I have built some 'tiny' TC-s and larger one some time ago, but that went totally wrong (in all sides) DRSSTC is next intended..
Also i made lots of flyback and ignition coil drivers, other kinds of electronics (radio, atmel microcontrollers, ..) actually im not leaving alone any field of electronics :)

Nice.
I'm still trying to get a small enough transformer, thought about winding my own, since this thing is going to be tiny! ( and because my caps are only rated for 10kv! :p )

I've tried some half-assed SSTCs before, but everyone knows; half-assed + TC = failure x)
(fun with so many new smilies... )
Re: Say Hi
Marko, Thu Feb 09 2006, 07:17PM

I'm still trying to get a small enough transformer,

I used ignition coil and it is perfect.
For more power rectified flyback could be used, or small bug zapper transformer..
I used few beer bottles as caps, that tc obivously didnt come close to resonance but streamers were nice even without it..
I scrapped everything now and im only keeping the wound secondary.
Topload was a ping-pong sized plastic ball in alu foil.

Probably it would be possible some simple SSTC setup with NE555 or maybe ZVS driver (mini DRSSTC) %-6

Re: Say Hi
Chris Russell, Thu Feb 09 2006, 11:08PM

A few quick notes:

The green arrow is meant to be a solution for the problem of long URLs. Lots and lots of people will dump a 200 character URL into a post without bothering to format it, wreaking havoc with the board's layout. If you don't like having green arrows, the solution is simple and elegant: use the [url] tags. You can then put whatever text you like for the link, including the original URL, provided it is of a reasonable length.

Signatures are not for dispersing political viewpoints. Flags and other logos are allowed only for the purpose of geographical identification (ie, you are from or are living in Canada, so you put a Canadian flag in your signature), or for showing some sort of affiliation that would be relevant to a science community (for example, ARRL membership).

I agree that if I specifically allowed flags, I would have no choice to accept whichever flags users wanted to post, including country of origin flags, political flags, royal canadian kilted yaksmen flags, and so on. However, the rules are pretty clear on this... I allow images that are not of a political nature.
