Why the icons?

The icons on this board seem counterintuitive.
The gray ones make sense, I suppose. Why does a check mark mean popular? Shouldn't that be an exclamation point?
Why is a popular thread that has new posts green with a checkmark, and an unpopular one red? Shouldn't they at least be the same color if there are unread threads? Why not red for both?
I know it's a minor detail, but it would be quick to change and be less confusing.

I agree.
Red seems as if the thread is locked or not replied or something..
green for unread, and green with an exclamation point (or some other marker) for > 10 replies would be fine.

The red "new post" icons have been changed to green.
