And video is more than 1000 words so: Link2

No one was hurt because i knew very well something like this can happen so we had necessary safety precautions. Cleaning of floor and ceiling took over 3 hours.

Why did it happen? - I dont know. Maybe something arced over or capacitor string had runaway failure. Lesson learned hard way.

Dang, if you had been standing next to that we might have one less member O.O

Why'd you clean the ceiling? I think it looked impressive wink

Actually i was roughly 1 meter away from the doubler when it blew up. Between me and the doubler was 25mm thick MDF plate and i was wearing full face shield and hearing protection.

New pair of underwear was needed cheesey

Bad caps = KABOOM! (note- this monitor was made in 2005, at the height of the bad caps fiasco)
Things haven't improved much it seems.

FWIW, I have a Samsung R74-series 40" LCD TV that has an identical standard failure mode in its SMPS - I just re-capped it with decent Panasonic caps and its fine now (lots of forums discussed this).

The annoying thing is that Samsung are generally regarded as a very good quality make, and even they had problems with this (my TV dates from early 2006, so probably made in late 2005).

The bad capacitor fiasco was great, I got a good pile of free equipment out of that, it was all nice and easy to fix. :)

I didn't take pictures of the damage, but I've had a number of mosfets explode. I had a half bridge running when I turned the juice up too high and BANG, bits of plastic shrapnel whizzed by my face. I place a shield of some sort over such things now when in the testing phase.

I recently stuck a lytic in backwards by accident and didn't notice until it vented a jet of awful smelling smoke right in my face while I was hunched over it with a scope probe. Thankfully it didn't blow the can off, I've seen that happen before.

Me and capacitor banks just dont mix cheesey

I knew this was going to happen sooner or later so my bank is put together in a way that lets failing capacitor to fly out without damaging anything else.

Terminal piece and can were left attached to busbars while bottom end and actual capacitor element flew across the room :p

Very thin secondary wire, too thin to handle without it snapping. Its more like tape with thin magnet wire moulded into it.
