I get my new laser to work, using the fridge pump , for this I vaccum a wine bottle, I vaccum the laser cavity ,and while the pump is still runing I fix the wine bottle (not half full of amptyness) to the output of the pump, effectively making a double stage pump...

That's a pretty neat trick. Have you tried using a larger gas cylinder? Apart from the larger volume, they don't have the habit of shattering while you're (not) looking.

I didn't have any thing like that around , but I put a piece of fabric around the bottle...

The higher the pressure, the narrower the pumping window, we're talking about ~1ns for nitrogen at atmospheric pressure.
There exists a relation for the lifetime of the excited level as a function of the operating pressure: 746ad03ee9ff7b4ae3dbf7c17d218740
A peaking capacitor is introduced to compensate for the "slow" marx bank.


I'm trying to do this, unfortunately it's not at all clear how to calculate the value of the peaking capacitor. Some sources suggest it's a function of the Marx bank's inductance, but some of the LE Marx-powered nitrogen lasers use quite large peaking capacitors despite Marxes of fairly non-inductive appearance... and a bit of further research suggests getting the value of the peaking cap right is critical to minimizing risetime.

Any ideas?
