At one stage I was doing voltage readings on my 1.5kJ pulse caps for can crushing. I was only getting a puzzling damped curve on the CRO where I should have been getting a ringing discharge with voltage reversal. To test this, I put 5 or so 1N4007's across the cap in reverse.
No problems charging but when fired the diode chain exploded presumably after 80% voltage reversal (1.2kJ) got dumped back into the diodes. The only bit I ever found was a small bit of black diode plastic embedded in my wrist. The rest of me was behind a blast shield.

So the voltage reversal was there all right and the problem was too much inductance in my voltage divider leads.

On my first tesla coil, I built one of those spark plug spark gaps. Nobody told me not to use the "resistorized" kind. I had no idea. Darn things started exploding quite loudly sending ceramic shrapnel all over the place. I got a nice knot on my head where one of the "knobs" hit me and a pretty deep cut on my arm. Didn't go quite as I had planned! cheesey

My new tesla coil's bridge exploded the other day after I fed it with filterd DC, then i tried it again today... same thing happend. The mosfets blew up pretty good and the thing lit on fire, haha oh well guess i have to make another one now

Ugh, nice one (explosion)
Strange that capacitor blew also..
What was the purpose of the cap, decoupling or what..??

If the cap blows first it will take all the bridge down. When the bridge goes down, it breaks usually 1/2.

What I think happened was that the mosfets gate shorted, and the mosfets blew up. But also the resistors on the gates fried too, and they lit on fire (that little blob of silver below the cap in the above pic was a resistor and solder). Since the resistors were really close to the cap i think it just melted it and then it shorted out and it lit on fire too haha... and a second later it was all gone sad

This is what it looked like after with everythign still mounted.

That mosfet with blown gate obivously sent it off (gate, the leg) and physically smashed/burnt cap, resistors, and entire bridge got pulverized.

Or maybe cap was first really??

Gate breeches are usually worst kind of failure for mosfets (very often explosive), they dont like it at all.
I dont ssee any zeners or TVS at gates maybe it was the problem...??

Yeah I'm pretty sure that the gate over volted (no zeners or TVS) and that was the reason it failed. When I rebuild it I will definately add zeners.
