* Completed January 2018
* Totally self-contained for portability
* Single 833A
* Single MOT
* Separate variacs for plate voltage and filament voltage
* Power factor correction
* EMI filter
* 20" streamers with interruptor

Operational picture is with ion motor attached to discharge electrode running in CW mode.

Hi all, its been a while since I frequented the site, just wanted to share my work on a VTTC which continues to evolve with each day of isolation. Its by no means finished but it keeps me occupied.

It is based largely on the work of Steve Wards schematics, and advice from others I have made a working coil.
It's truly my first real experience with a VTTC, and was surprised at how forgiving they are. It wasn't long before I assembled a prototype on my bench and had it producing some sparks. Please excuse the crudity of the design as I am convinced it is far from optimal. Hopefully it is interesting.

Tube is a TY4-400 - capable of about 350W dissipation but earlier tests used an 812A which is a nice step up.
Transformer is a pair of railway transformers, at 1KW each, with 650V and 120V windings, I have hooked up the 650V windings in series to get about 1400V at 1KVA at full power into the multiplier.

Each of the 120V windings are in series and allow me to drive the pair via a 240V 8A variac. I made a crude interrupter based on an SCR and external signal generator which as you can see is not synchronised at all, but produces some interesting beat frequencies. I am trying to find a more elegant solution for this.

I am using Russian ceramic doorknob capacitors for my tank circuit and the secondary coil has a resonant frequency of about 750Khz with a topload, and about 1.4Mhz without, i estimate its about 900 turns of 0.25mm wire on a 50mm tube, I tend not to be too precise with the secondary as what seems to be important is determining the frequency and then working back to design the primary components.

Here I test the coil in CW mode with some large 220UF 2500V capacitors on a full wave doubler to get over the transformers low voltage. The result is a very quiet power arc, and due to the energy storage the oscillation continues long after the variac is set to 0V.

I suppose my goal would be to make a coil which operates in pulsed mode and can dump that large amount of energy in the capacitors into the primary, I am think maybe a hydrogen thyratron or something in place of the SCR to handle the peak current and voltages. Anyway hope you found this interesting.
