New Coil. After running a 4.5" dia 22" length secondary at 15/150 with a primary of 0.25" refrigeration tubing, I decided to step things up a quantum. This coil has a 6.5" secondary, 28" length. The primary is 12 turns of spring copper weather stripping interspaced with 0.25" insulating foam weatherstripping. The whole thing is sandwiched between 2 polycarbonate disks, and tapped with some modified pin vises. The gap is an SRSG running at 1800 rpm, 120bps.

All designed using JavaTC.

Spark lengths are somewhere between 50" and 60".

My 5th attempt.
This coil has an 8.5"x34" secondary wound with 20ga thick build magnet wire. The top toroid is 6"x24" though I'm going to experiment with a bigger one made of aluminum air duct.

Same secondary as my prior coil - 1.25"x12" (inner) wound spring bronze spaced at 0.25", sandwiched between 2 polycarbonate disks. The secondary is resting atop 2" of LDPE to reduce the k, which I think was a partial contributor to the demise of Coil V4.

Running a pole pig. Tank is 0.06uf. ARSG.

Hi All!

This is the story of a restoration.

in principle there was only the residues of a badly modified Tesla Coil, all connections were messed up, the primary coil had been unwound, the secondary coil was missing........

Of course i had no problems for the rewiring and for the primary coil, i removed and taut the original wires and i reused the same wires for cabling everything with a better shape; the problem is only for the secondary

I find a piece of bakelite tube of the right shape and i decided to use it for this secondary.

First of all, i measured the resonant frequency of the primary circuit; the two leyden jars had a really small capacitance so the resonant frequency was quite high...... 1,95 MHz with the alligator clip connected to the last turn, i need few turns of a really thick wire for the secondary coil!!!!!

After some calculations i opted for 255 turns of 1,5mm double insulated magnet wire on a 6x40 cm coilform, now is time to wind!

Th

Th

Now i need a breakpoint, for aesthetic reasons i opted for a turned brass point mounted on a turned bakelite cap, the result is really beautiful; note on the second photo how is thick the secondary wire!

Th

Th

now is need a ground connection; i cannot use a modern socket so, one more time, brass and lathe seems the best mix

Th

Th

This is the overall results, some other minor aestetic modifications are required but is now in a working conditions and is also great work!

Th

Th

Th

Don't expect a big performance from this coil, the energy stored in the leyden jars is really low, the two-balls spark gap suffer of many quenching problems, the resonant frequency is outrageous high and the Q factor of both LC circuits is quite low, this Tesla Coil is capable to make about 1cm of streamer and 2 cm of sparks over a grounded electrode (AKA my finger!) if powered with a 10kV OBIT and about 2 cm of streamers (plus an huge corona on the last turn) and 3 cm of sparks over my finger if powered with a Rumkorff coil.

i haven't take a pic of the discharge because is nothing special and is also very difficult to photograph (due to the EM field the camera hangs if I approach too)

Ciao!
Fabio.

After almost 3 years I finally finished my first SGTC totally made from perspex. It was a ridiculous amount of work to shape, sand and polish all the perspex components. It was build for the looks so I don't use a ground rail and an adjustable primary coil. The secondaire coil and torus are removable for transport. More pictures can be found on my site.

power = NST 8kV 63mA
sparkgap = tungsten rods + fan to increase breakdown voltage
spark length = about 50-60cm

Here is a nice picture when I was almost ready with building it. On the picture you see the SGTC upside down without the wheels.

In my opinion the sparkgap is the best looking part I made.
