If your blower is directly attached to your spark gap housing, just try to orient the whole assembly so the blower is not right up close to the primary conductor. A small amount of the energy in the primary circuit will be "wasted" in heatig the blower's housing, rather than coupling into the secondary to produce sparks.
The turn-turn spacing on the primary is not hyper critical. If the spacing is too small, you can get turn-turn arcing, especially where your "tapping connector" even further reduces spacing. Extremely wide spacing places some of the primary turn so far from the secondary that the magnetic coupling is reduced.
There is a tremendous amount of flexibility in Tesla coil design and construction. None of the things we have been talking about (blower location relative to the primary, large primary tutn-turn spacing, etc) will prevent your coil from operating. Tweaking these characteristics is all part of the tuning and optimization process.
Some people build their first coil, get some sparks, say "Project Finished", and then immediately move on to some completely different hobby. Others may spend months refining and modifying their first coil, trying to obtain better performance, longer sparks, adding more input power, larger topload, more sophisticated spark gap, etc, etc.
Correctly tuned, your coil should produce sparks "as-is". With additional tweaking, it can produce more, longer, brighter sparks.

Thanks Herr Zapp, I am excited to test it out. Should be done by next week. Next project, a SSTC. I'm a pianist, so my goal is to mic the piano, and run the signal to an SSTC, that would be amazing. Any ideas of a good place to get started, I've already read Richie Burnetts site, and talked to a few others.
Check out this variac. Will it work for what I need? I thought it looked perfect. It looks as though it might even have a line filter built in! I called about 20 local electronics stores and none had variacs or line filters...soo, ebay here I come.
I don't think it has the built in line filter, so just in case, would this 10A Schaffner IEC line filter work?
Or would this filter be the better choice?
Please respond soon, the bidding on the items will end soon.
