playing with a self oscillating resonant smps on a breadboard:

1340156097 3900 FT57865 Bd681

first i got the feedback winding phased wrong, and i decided to let it burn for a while. the white ash/plastic stuff goes all the way to the die.

1340156117 3900 FT57865 Led

after i was getting 24v dropped across my 10 ohm dummy load, i just put a led in its place to test current flow. red flash... bang! the missing side was facing me(ouch). knowing now that it worked, i swapped the open circuit resistor for a good one, and it was able to smoke 1W's in seconds cheesey

I have destroyed a few 555s before, but none of them had too spectacular an asplosion or destruction. I did, this once, find a tiny Pikachu toy that I have no idea what it did, because for a long time, it sat in my room, not working. (it was a plastic one, not one of those adorable fluffy ones that talk) I had no idea the polarity of the thing, so I guessed, and I guessed wrong. I then learned what pikachu would smell like if his thunderbolt went the wrong way. I kept the toy, but it smelled of magic smoke for a really long time. I have no idea where i kept the circuitry of it.

When I was making my boost converter, I suppose the 1M dropping resistor failed, sending 400V into the comparator, which failed short, and sent 400V straight into this 555...

Haha I had exactly the same thing happen to me when I was prototyping mine the dam thing jumped right off the breadboard and tryed to kill me LOL

Used to work in electric fencing - wish I had pics of some of the lightening damaged ones! Generally no copper left on the pcb, and lots of loose burnt things lying around in the case.

Everyone tells me you can't fix a blown bolb but that work fine if you give them a little more power LOL

Got a microwave oven from the electronics recycling. Externally was in good condition and no electronic component inside had any visible damage. Until i decided to get the magnetron tube out:

Sigh..

Still unclear what happened. I wasn't even pushing the damn thing and one transistor let go.
