I'm a bit late, but I'm using rolled dry PE caps for my 4 mot, and 2 mot coil, and they are working since 2008, without a safety spark gap! A 60nF cap was around 40$. No MMC construction is cheap like this. The key is to use "tube foil" (I don't know how it's called in english, tubular film maybe?) like this : LINK. You need to place the metal foil inside the tube foil. Yesterday I took apart one of my rolled caps, and there were absolutely no sign of any degradation. The dielectric thickness is 800um. I never had any problems with the rolled PE caps.

My flying electrodes are 1/8", and my stationaries are now 1/4". I was running 1/8" stationary for some time though. They got hot after about 10-15 seconds and performance dropped a bit, but they held up well.

@ omegalabs : Thank you for your input.

@ redruM69 : Thank you for the offer but I think I will stick with more commonly available electrode material. I did try copper electrodes, and it worked better than stainless steel.

I did some more long exposure shots with the new toroid configuration, and fine tune. I also measured the maximum spark length, point to point, to a grounded target, and I get 170cm, which is more than 3 times the secondary winding length (51cm).
There is still more tweaking to do, espacially replace the original lossy toroid which spits corona everywhere.
