You don't mean sodium amalgam produced as a by-product of chlorine manufacture by mercury cell brine electrolysis, do you?
The sodium amalgam formed at the mercury cathode is siphoned off and reacted with water, liberating hydrogen. Sodium hydroxide is formed and the mercury reverts to its original state and can be returned to the cell where the cycle begins afresh.

Just a thought, would i do better seperating the powder off the mercury by just sucking the clean stuff from the middle, or pushing the mercury out of a large syringe with a cotton ball or something to filter it?

I suggest another method I use.
Place the mercury in a cooking funnel lined with a piece of printer paper. Poke a small hole in it with a pin, and the pressure (mercury is dense) will force the clean stuff through the hole.

No its a putty like glob "that behaves as though" is was an amalgam of Hg and NH4--(which never has been found). Its such a simple experiment- just a dry cell or two and ammonia water forte.
Another thing I remember is a thin glass tube filled with a electrolyte and a drop of mercury. The drop could be 'propelled' along by powering the ends with DC one way and brought back by reversing the polarity. and the electrolyte was a witches brew to make it work It seemed to create a bit of turbulence at the mercury drop causing it to roll. when the pole shifted, the thing happened at the other end.

If you heated mercury instead of of water in a turbine it would work but they havent tried that in long time. Perhaps that project could be lifted out of the mothballs.
