I've been looking at rust prevention and removal recently. There are two types of product which look very handy but I can't find out anything about their chemistries. Can anyone help?

The first type is the 'Non-Hazardous' brown Anti-Rust VCI impregnated Paper included with good quality steel tools to stop them rusting?
They also claim VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) is included in oils like 'V80 VCI'.
I've seen references to hazardous volatile corrosion inhibitors, but not to any that are non-hazardous.

Also, what's in the new type of rust removers that have near neutral pH, dissolve rust, not metal, and leave the metal passivated, unlike the old Phosphoric acid based rust killers where the metal 'flash rusts' again as soon as air gets to it. I've seem examples of products like this called 'Evapo-Rust' and 'Restore Rust Remover'.

A search on "Organic rust remover on Google patents threw up" :-

Link2 you could also try searching "organic rust remover MSDS" and see if you can turn up any data sheets.

Thanks Martin - good Googling technique! That patent says:

... a water-soluble composition which comprises a basic compound, a water-soluble metal chelating agent, and thiourea dioxide and which, when dissolved in an aqueous medium, gives an alkaline solution.

Which fits with a manufactures description of Vapo Rust, except for pH:

... works at a pH of 6.1 to 7...
Once the chelating agent has removed the iron, a sulfur bearing organic molecule pulls the iron away ...

S'ok I seem to have a knack for internet searching, people come to me at work to try and find stuff that they can't find on the net and I usually succeed although it's not that hard, use of +/- and quotes "" helps a lot (many people are very lazy when searching, most of my searches contain +/- and "") as well as picking up on certain key words such as "organic" and "msds" to both filter out other rust removers and also get pages that may have techy information in them. Also Google patents seems to be surprisingly little known about but it a very good patent search engine.

Martin.
