Does anyone know the formulation of the rub-and-shake lead test kits. I vaguely remember the old stoichimetry routine but need a quick method to know if lead-free solder was used on a circuit board.
Is there another easy way to test?
The kit costs $5. per test. Rub - shake- , then rub the tip on white paper-if it is pink, then lead is present > .5%

I do not have a soldering iron with a digital readout of tip temp but have many new irons to try some things with. A servicer with one bench soldering station coiuld easily contaminate a lead free board by using an iron previously used with lead based solders. Which soldering irons actually return a measured value fron the tip to the controller/display ? My Weller station used a Currie point switch in the tip so would cycle around a setpoint .
Using your suggestion, I might try a melt test of a scraping of lead and tin solder in a slowly heated flat crucible to see if the test to see which melts first would work.

If it is possible to scrap a small sample of the solder off the circuit board you could use the flame test to compare the lead based and non lead based solders.

Flame test might work. I could try and make a tin and lead salt solution and dip a glass rod with a fine platinum wire into it. I would have to dig up a bunsen burner or use a propane torch if i can get a pure enough flame with the hot zone. the lead solder has tin in it though.

I do have ammonium sulphate and other dodgy stocks and might have-the ide. the pristine water would need some clean glassware to make. (or perhaps this beast could be refurbished)
