I did this when I was a kid, during the Cold War also. But then I discovered growing crystals, my dad got a "Order in Nature" Science study series crystal growing kit, and I left the garden behind. Potassium Chromium Sulfate Dodecahydrate octahedron crystals anyone?
Science education back those days was heavily emphasized, we were losing the space race to the Russians. Those were exciting times.

I came across a 'magic garden' kit a few weeks ago on ebay UK when I was looking to buy some sodium silicate for making refractory cement. I've just looked again and couldn't find it, but perhaps it will be advertised again.
The wikipedia article gives a better understanding of the reactions than I could have given myself, and makes me wonder how the garden might evolve in the presence of a powerful external organising principle in the form of electrostatic and magnetic fields.

I have done these, using my own sodium silicate solution and old etching solution among other ingredients, the kits are still available here in the states (at least they were a few years ago when I last looked into it).
