I've got about a tablespoon of potassium nitrate, but it's a bit black because of some airfloat charcoal in it. I've disolved and recrystalized it twice now, but theres still alot of charcoal left mixed with the stuff. So, any ideas on how I might get the two seperated?

centrafuging comes to mind....but that can be tricky.
What you could do is dissolve it in a large enough solution such that the carbon remains at the bottom of a large column, then decant off your KNO3 and let it evaporate. I think this is a reasonable approach and requires maybe a 1L cylinder, which is no big deal.

Filtering did nothing, it all slipped right through. Decanting, diluting, and repeating worked just fine. It all crystallized out after a good boil down, resulting in some real nice white kno3 after a round with the mortar and pestle.

It was left over stuff from some black powder I made, and it got some of the charcoal dusted over it just from it settling out of the air. I figured I might try cleaning it out just because I had my glass out and had nothing better to do. After that, I mixed it with a bit of sugar, filled my lab/garage with smoke, and had some fun with the various hene's lying around. Of course KClO4 is better than KNO3, but NH4ClO4 is better than KClO4...
