Hi all.
Seems that this is becoming the phosphor of choice for OLED experimentation.
Any ideas how hard it would be to synthesize some?
i did read that it generates yellow light in lightsticks, so perhaps it is possible to obtain an unused one and extract it as for contact, i have some ITO "blanks" from used touchscreens...

Hi Andre, don't forget that the activity of scintillators, phosphors and fluophors is more often than not mediated by the presence of impurities or dopants, which cannot be added after the fact, but which must be introduced at some prior point in the synthesis chain. I'm no chemist, so you'd have to ask someone who really knows their stuff, but I would guess that the incorporation of oxygen defects into crystalline rubrene to activate it was a non-trivial matter, needing everything from fume cupboards, to hazardous waste disposal contracts, and an approved, inspected chemical storage area.
Chemiluminescence experiments where rubrene is just one of a number of possible fluophores - dyes - can certainly be performed by 'kitchen sink' chemistry, but remember that rubrene is a suspected carcinogen, whilst typical chemiluminescence solvents like dioctyl phthalate, (a PVC plasticiser known in the trade as DOP) which are often thought of as non-toxic, in terms of single exposures, are in fact established carcinogens in long term exposure models. It's gloopy stuff that will take forever to evaporate (which is why it is sometimes used as vacuum pump oil) so what you spill onto the wooden floor of your shed that sinks into the timber will be there for a very long time, long after you have forgotten the spillage, slowly releasing carcinogenic molecules into the air. (Giving myself the creeps here! )
