Hi all.
I was looking into hacking the CCD from a used HP PSC (the printers keep going Tango Uniform but the scanners don't).
this particular type of printer has an LED light source which means the CCD has no internal colour sensor, making such a mod somewhat feasible.
I discovered that a CMOS camera sensor can indeed be modified to detect alpha particles and weak X-rays/gamma by adding a pyrolytic graphite shield (can be split down then sanded down to sub 0.2mm thickness quite easily)
In addition, reducing the clock on the camera increases noise but makes detecting a particle more likely due to increased charge accumulation.
Anyone ever tried this? if so can you provide pinouts/timings for the sensor? I have some diagnostic equipment including a Saleae Logic3 analyzer.

I discussed your experiments with my pal Plazmatron just the other day, Andre, and he found some time ago that CCD devices were quickly destroyed by alphas, which is hardly a surprise given their MeV-wise energy and 100% absorption in the pixels.

EDIT: this is an old thread but..
what about simply plating a thin layer of ZnS;Ag directly on the bare graphite sheet? Then use UV glue over that to hold it in place, the surface pores should hold enough powder.
