i wasn't sure if where I should post this (if it even should be posted instead on pm'ing a mod directly), but here it is...

I have noticed that more and more people have been making comments like 'this thread should be locked', 'do you homework first', 'google it then ask us', and people quoting the rules at people (not mentioning any names)

Now I was under the impression that if we thougt a rule was being broken or we thought the thread was unsafe, etc we were supposed to report it to the mods using the convient 'report to mod' button, and were speficically told not try to take action into out own hands...

So, what am I suposed to do?

All such posts are off topic and is a rule violation in itself and the post should be deleted and the incident be recorded on the moderators forum. If you can't stay on topic then don't post.

The correct procedure is to alert a moderator and/or ignore the thread. At the moment the moderator team is in disarray and is more likely to join the off topic discussions than bringing them back on track, c'est la vie.

Heheh, admittedly true, Bjorn *cough* not mentioning any topics wink

If in doubt, add more moderators, delegate more work to them, and go on Easter holidays wink

If you see a definite rule violation, hit that report to moderator button.

I don't think it's a matter of just increasing the mod team size. It's more an issue of keeping to the standards, which is something that's being worked on.

This is all very true, but sometimes we have information, than as a side note we say"this thread should be locked" to gain the eye of the mods.

Hear, hear! I think we should be less worried about making newcomers google every little detail and try a bit harder to give good advice to them. There are plenty of facts to be found with google, but what's the point of a forum if you can't ask a question? I'd rather see a few threads from noobs wondering about how to ballast an MOT than one announcement about a HV related death...

I think we are all willing to help out "newbies" with their high voltage related questions and inquiries. The GOOGLE rule wasn't really established because of that. It was created to prevent questions such as:

1. Whats a MOSFET?

2. Whats a Tesla Coil?

3. Whats the difference between a MOSFET and IGBT?

and so forth . . .

which of course can easily be answered by a quick GOOGLE search.

It is a matter of politeness and respect. It is not polite to expect other people to make an effort to answer a question when the poster does not make an effort to read up on the basics.

Checking the HVWiki is a good start: http://wiki.4hv.org

With some basic knowledge it becomes much easier to ask a sensible question that does not make people mad. A good question encourages people to think and that can be even more valuable than the answer.

Indeed. If you see a thread that needs our attention, please let us know. The worst possible thing you can do is try to take matters into your own hands. This usually just makes the thread worse, as it drifts off topic, or the thread creator tries to defend his question.

That is not how you "gain the eye of the mods." If a moderator has read that far, he/she already knows it needs locking, and you are just stating the obvious. You should be reporting it instead.
