This is my tesla coil that I made for the local science fair. Single tube and running off of 600v, so I only get 2 inch sparks.:-(( Any comments/tips to get bigger sparks appreciated. I am in the process of putting it in a case, so I dont have any pics of it running.

Well, use a small MOT. Just find a microwave somewhere. Either that, or find a good high voltage capacitor and double your supply your using now.

Ok. Can I use a MOC for the level shifter? On a related note the case is almost finished.

Yes, a MOC will work, but you might want two in parallel. But MOTs are always better tongue .

Umm, give me your location, and if you are close enough i will donate a MOT. Just send your state by PM.

No need. I already have a mot. Thanks for offering though. I can't use it for two reasons, tank capacitor is rated for 15kv not 20kv and my parents are safety obsessed(my dad wanted to enclose the entire coil in Plexiglas). I am almost finished, 2nd light should be tomorrow. Here is me with the coil. It is fairly big but I am mostly just short frown .

Nice looking coil, Weston. I love the wood/plexy base.

I understand about your parents, Weston. My dad said after I had a few years at college maybe he would help me install a 40A wall socket. The worst part was his laughing at me like it was a stupid idea. Its not like going to college is going to make me any better at don't tough the high voltage output/wall socket. Good luck with your parents and you future in HV! Perhaps you can get your dad or mom into the hobby, or at least show him some sparks to enlightning him.

You should have no trouble at all using a MOT with a 15kV rated tank capacitor.

I am using a 1nF 20kV pulse rated mica in my dual 811A vttc and its fed by a MOT with voltage doubler, 200Vac in from a variac, so its somewhere around 4kV positive AC peaks. 12" inch sparks.

Yes indeed :P. The MOT will make the tube run red until good tuning is achieved. If your tank cap dies, send me a PM :P.
