Does the HV voltage input on a SGTC govern what your Tank Cap should be? I tried using (Link2 to calculate this and it says for a 15kv, 30 ma transformer I need a capacitor value of .0053 uF. This seems to small...?

That sounds about right. But no, I does not GOVERN, it just gives you some idea. You can go lower or higher(not recommended over 1-2nF) It would be a very good way to choose your capacitor though.

0.0053uF is about right for a 15kV/30mA transformer.

From the top of my head, a LTR (larger than resonant) size for a 15kV/30mA is around 0.013uF i believe.

It basically has to do with how much the transformer can charge a capacitor up to within a specified amount of time which is usually dictated by the type of gap used, line frequency, output current of transformer, etc... So it is not based on just voltage.

No, those capacitors are metallize polyester and wouldn't do that well under high current pulsed conditions that a primary capacitor for a tesla coil would see.

Stick to either the CDE 942 series which are the best out there or the GE 42L series which work great as well.

Just remember, that the CDE 942 are more forgiving then the GE 42L series. But if your coil is tuned and working properly, the GE 42L series will work just as well for both SGTC and DRSSTCs. I use GE 42L caps exclusively.

I am investigating the 'recommended value' right now! I want to look at how the different values really stress the transformer. And now with my new voltage divider! (on the other thread) I can see the terminal voltage and (with the overcurrent protection resistor connected between the two terminals) measure the current at the same time! HOW FREGGIN COOL!

So far I have used 1.6x resonant and good results there, 2.4x resonant I think is stressing things too much, but I will find out for a fact very soon!

Try newark or mouser for caps. I got my 42L's from newark I think...

you could also try to build your own, takes long, but cheap.
and you are sure it can have the great discharges it needs, some other capacitor sometimes aren't able to get out all the energy fast enough.

there are some great things about designing your TC.

My TC also uses 15kv and 30ma transformer, and capacitor used (9nf PE bottle) is far too smal to get close to resonce. Largest sparks were ~10cm..
I need a good capacitor of at least 30nF and I think you should aalso use largest possible, then use fewer primary turns to find resonance..
