Well is this a overkill for 600joule 200 volt bank... ??

No really, as you could always use it later for higher powered projects....

Even if the flashtube would not shatter, it would not be any good, as they are designed to burn any energy you put in, and not pass it. You can try making a simple sealed spark gap, even a piece of rubber hose with two electrodes works for a few shots, and it is absolutely silent. Triggering can be a problem, I have used series trigger transfomers in the past, but they are bound to slow down your pulse. A high power mechanical switch would really be your best bet at these voltage levels. I have used one made of a big solenoid (actually a kind of coilgun in itself, powered by a 3300uF 300V cap) and heavy aluminium electodes for 100s to a few 1000J, and I never had problems with welding.

I've never gone SCR shopping before. tongue Does this one look good for my cap bank?

This SCR with 500 joules would blow up ultimately, depends on your max current but I dont recommend that at any costs...

I, however, do recommend that thyristor. I've used the 50ria60 thyristors for switching smaller banks (170J) at peak currents well above 5kA. If you can get them cheaply i would give them a go. Else you can try to find bigger ones.

This is just a small 50A thyristor, peak is about kiloamp and half and I think it would die istantly if we try etc. to explode wool with caps...
Maybe more in paralell would be good if they are really cheap..

One idea I had on a 'poor mans pulse switch' was a simple mech. switch with a selenoid that slammed a piece of copper tube over two other pieces of copper tube. The tubes are cheap and easily replacable. For sound deadening I wonder if the assembly can be put in a double walled box with insulation?

Another fellow once sent me plans for a triggered spark gap that used large brass freeze plugs as the terminals (placed facing each other) and between them a needle of sorts, connected to the hv output of an auto ignition coil. A pulse sent to the ignition coil would create an arc between the terminals and set off the switch.

These might be overkill for a smaller cap bank though, and maybe rather bulky for a small project.

You could get some brass balls and make a triggered gap....

In order not to double post im editing this one...

I tried idea af fully quenched gap but have no power diodes, and its all questionable because diode needed must be as large as SCR.
I have diodes powerful enough maybe to discharge photoflash capacitor.

This is good idea for low-current gaps but not as pulse switch...
