Since I can't get a decent SCR for my coil gun anywhere without massive shipping costs, I need to look for alternatives. I've tried various switches, but they have either welded shut, or are just to noisy. My latest idea is to use a flash tube from a camera. To ignite the arc I'll use a pezio, and the cap bank should keep the arc burning. My cap bank is 450v @ 4700µf.

Will this work? And will the small flash tube survive a 500 Joule shot without shattering?

Hah, I don't know if it will survive but normally theres only about 4 joules flowing throught them....(in a disposable camera)

My bet is on shatter.

If you really want to try, put on the protective gear and do a destructive test - with the camera ready.

I remember Madgyver (is he still around anywhere?) used a flyback or ignition coil or something to for a triggered gap in one of his cap banks.

I doubt whether a flash tube from a disposable camera would work. It would probably be a single shot device, with the tube too cracked to fire again, or it just explodes :P
btw, have you considered using a large circuit breaker- like the industrial 6kVA surge types?

I cracked one with 60 Joule so it is not going to work at all.

What about a large sealed spark gap? I think I saw like that at Link2 once. Otherwise I guess I'm going have to buy a SCR...

I'll tell you now it's unadvisable.

I have similar problem for my 600 joule bank.
SCR seems only good solution, or simplest posible mechanical solutions (like tesladownunder's rope-switch) that you won't be sorry for if they weld..

Small flaashlamps may be just fun blowing up.. cheesey

Just go for a SCR- I got a 2kA peak current 1200V SCR for 10.00 shipped. It works great, and if it ever fails, I have the other half of it, it is a dual unit.
