So I have a bank of capacitors that weighs in at 390V and 16.4 F (yes farads, not micro farads). Anyways It's made of about 100 capacitors in series with balancing boards to make sure the voltage across each cap is the same. Anyways a couple of years ago I built a coilgun, but on a much smaller scale, and now I have this massive cap bank to mess around with and...well how could I not think about making some type of electromagnetic propulsion gun.

So my main question right now is, can I use capacitors with a rating this high? and does having that high of a capacitance really matter with electromagnetic propulsion guns, my reasoning why it wouldn't be, would be because you wouldn't be able to release all the energy stored in the cap bank, or it might just be wasted...does that make sense?

Anyways anyone have any grand ideas? I'll take some pictures tomorrow and post them.

A few rules of thumb says it is not possible to discharge the capacitors in the required time but we need to know the exact specifications of the capacitors to say in detail what is possible or not.

You could make a large cannon with a lot of stages or a gun that can fire a few hundred shots without recharging.

In order to make any kind of magnetic gun with that bank you will need to use a IGBT for the switch so that you can turn off the voltage to your coil. The limiting factor at this point would be amount of current you can draw from the bank, which will be determined by the ESR/ESL of the caps. Do you know what the resistance/inductance for you bank is?

Be safe with that thing...

Sounds like your using super capacitors. With that much in seris, are you sure that it isnt exceeding the breakdown voltage? Those Capacitors also dont stand up to pulsing very well.

Hi Bust A Cap

If the specs you listed are correct then each capacitor is 3.9V and 1640 Farads. These are supercaps or ultracaps, I thought that these caps are not suitable for high currents or pulse dischrages.

Ozzy:
I was thinking along these same lines. Before they became mine we were using them as cap bank for an electric car, essentially replacing a giant block of batteries with a giant block of caps.

So if the caps wouldn't be suited for larges pulses, any ideas for a use for this bank, that anyone can think of?

You could potentially use them to rapidly charge some caps that are rated for pulse discharges, and use ...'s idea for a coilgun that can fire tons of shots. Fully automatic electromagnetic weapons own. cheesey
