I have been looking for several days now for a place that carries high voltage, high amperage SCRs, like the ones that are used here for capacitor discharge into rail guns and coil guns. I would order from E-bay, however I need several identical ones for a reasonable amount of money. For now I need 4kA 500V modules, but I may need something even larger in the future. Neither Digikey or Mouser, which appear to be the popular sources here, look like they have what I am looking for, although Mouser looks like it is great for just about everything else.

And if digikey or mouser did have an item like that, i have no doubt you'd pat thru the nose for it.

I can't really suggest a place to look, but dont stop watching Ebay. I have 4 identical 1kV 400A 5.1KApk puck-type SCRs I got for $40 on Ebay, and they came pre-clamped (on massive heat sinks, but who cares). Unfortunately for me I un-clamped them because I needed the heatsinks for another application.

I'd offer to sell them ,but now I too have some massive capacitors!

You will often find them sold in fours like this, because they are used in a bridge configuration in massive light dimmers.

New question: After looking at CH Technologies (thanks rp181) i found this beauty among more moderately sized modules. However, they did not have 'SCRs' but a good deal of Thyristors. Are these the same things as SCRs? I have heard of them being used as high voltage pulse switches, but I have no understanding of how they work. Would they work on my test bed of 60J @ 300V or on my full scale project of 1-5kJ @ 450-900V?
Also, since CH Tech requires a quote, how much did you pay for your stud SCR's rp181, if you don't mind sharing?

thyristors used to mean a two terminal device, 4layer npnp structure, voltage triggered switch.
Basically an SCR with out the gate, and triggered by a controlled forward breakdown.

edit:
and ofcourse digikey has pucks,
Link2

but i would try ebay first, if you have a tight budget.

Atleast in Finland "thyristor" means exactly the same thing as an SCR.

I think a SCR is a type of thyristor, like an IGBT is a type of transistor. Link2

What you describe is a DIAC.
Some say that SCR and TRIAC are both a type of thyristor, others say that SCR and thyristor is the same thing.
