Good point haha. But wait, are you ever planning on having kids? lol

Make sure that housing is strong enough just incase... you could always add a layer of 1/4-1/2" polycarb to line the inside/outside of the plywood, that should do the trick.

I finally got this system all together and working!! It's pretty cool to pick this thing up, no wires attached at all, charge the caps and then blast a slug of aluminum with 2.3kj of energy cheesey

Project Page

I'll get some video of this thing soon.

OT - The 24kj system is also complete, and operational. Video of test firings will be forthcoming.

I assume you're trying to demonstrate a way to transfer the energy from the AL slug into another projectile, and keep the slug from flying away? I like it...was thinking of doing something to this effect like another fellow 4HV user did with golf balls...

Like him, you`ll be better off having the projectile held away from the disc and of similar mass otherwise a lot of the energy will go into smashing the guide off the front.
You can always use a barrel and solenoid arrangment to launch more aerodynamic slugs if that`s what you`re after.

Very few I've seen have any success with a solenoid arangement vs flat spiral. Have you? I am hoping to do some further testing with similar designs probably later this summer/fall.

I experimented with a few different solenoids and used short lengths of 1/4" copper tube as projectiles. It certainly worked with 10uF charged to ~8000V and severely dented but didn`t pierce an aluminium can at about 6`. There is room for improvement and the option of multiple stages makes it worthwhile in my opinion. Maybe I`ll have another go now...

I got a pair of the same caps from ebay. Mine are for a big DRSSTC cheesey I think they were 8 bucks each.

Sorry to be late to the party, but that's beautiful!

Have you thought much about projectiles?

Well, at this point I'm shooting 1/4" thick aluminum plates....they're quite destructive. I do want to rig up some sort of golf ball launcher sometime, and also a way to launch "rockets" from it.
